Hi @Ross, as mentioned already, you can view Builder Mode by pressing B (or Up on the D-pad if using a controller) to see the beaconed area:
Are you making sure that the green highlight is visible when placing blocks within the area?
Is the total not increasing for you as shown in the example below?

thats on biitula. and there’s an empty region. o-o

It is (albeit on the Steam testing branch). I just picked a world at random, but I could easily hasve demonstrated the example on a different world.
