because as i mentioned, as many mentioned, you can earn that back up ingame ANYWAYS which is why i keep coming back to the point ‘‘how can you justify making an entire race that maybe only 50 - 100 people will ever be able to afford? you talk about how you need money, which ofc you do, but isnt it contradicting if the price is more than the money you get from the people who even buy that pack?’’
exclusives are fine, cosmetics in themself are fine, but something that affects gameplay, being cut off for no reason other than to get people to buy things, is not, that is at best shady, at worst disgusting.
then let me ask you, did you honestly expect the idea ‘‘we will add an exclusive race for 450 euro+ backers to use’’ wouldn’t get any backlash? seriously?
i will shut up, completely, if you can promise me one thing, now, on text, Can you promise me that that new race will be nothing but a skin, and if they have racials will be completely identical to atleast one other race which is part of the game. can you promise me that? because i have seen it before ‘‘they are not stronger, they are just different’’ and surprise, they are usually stronger.
What’s really cool about making something that is that rare is it makes something simple very special. Let’s say it’s the same as the current catlike character with a horn and slightly different ability. Not that crazy right? But the thing that makes it cool is that it’s rare. If it’s that rare it doesn’t need to OP or crazy, because the thing that makes it cool is that it’s rare.
That’s really our thinking on it. Myself and Ollie were talking about what we could add for our higher level backers that would be be cool and didn’t affect the rest of the game and it seemed a: simple and b: cool for backers.
Then promise me what i asked before, promise me and everybody else watching this that it is only a skin because you kee coming back to the whole ‘‘it will have a different ability’’ which is gameplay changing, which is what will make people outraged, i am furious now, you might say its for horrible reasons and idiot, and i agree, but what i am doing now is nothing compared to the backlash you will get on steam.
nevermind, i will choose to trust you, but then i will leave on the last note, you should really change the phrasing for it, maybe to something like ‘‘a unique looking race’’ rather than ‘‘a unique race’’
Sure, I would be happy to explain how this works because I have already seen the process before. I am a backer of the game Planetary Annihilation. They did the exact same thing. Custom commander for $1000. When did they begin work on this custom models and skins after all the games art assets were complete. They were even kind enough to reveal the quoted prices from third party developers to model, texture, and animate a single commander. The quote was $3000 per commander. So, your not really going to rake in the cash on this type of venture. Hence why you do it after the assets all players see and use are finished.
So why are they doing this? Let’s take a look at Backer Survey number 2 http://goo.gl/forms/bIRHBsNGrb
Question half way down the page.
“In ONE word describe the character RACE you would love to play as.”
You might recall the answers they got back varied greatly.
There said the game would contain only 6 playable races. So how can resolve the conflict with everyone wanting a different creature? Perhaps you offer at a moderate cost the ability for a player to look like their desired character. I’m sure they would love for everyone to have there own character but unfortunately It cost money to make these, and if you follow my directions above you will find out just how much.
Long story short. They included this feature to say thank you to the fanatics that have supported them.
Holy shitstorm, batman. Exclusive content for high tier supporters is suddenly a bad thing? Somebody had better contact every major game developer for every big release for the last 10 years and let them know that those collectors-edition exclusives and goodies are banned by the internet. Benefits for pre-orders and early access is right out, too.
Spend more, get more. Isn’t that the way the world has always worked? If not, it’s a shame that Ferrari’s are locked behind a pay wall only accessible to millionaires. If they promise to make them so they only handle exactly like my Honda Civic, then it will be just fine.
So, why can’t they just make it unlockable to players who complete the game on hard or some equivalent, so that the shitstormers can at least be appeased by the exclusive eventually being obtainable for free? Would it even matter? 90% of those people would still never obtain said unlockable. So long as it’s truly balanced in its differences, making no impact to gameplay, why does it matter if you can get it after 500 hours of game play, or $500?
Yeah sorry, you are right, i must admit im just quite sad because i know i will never get the economy to support them more, and as such it feels so humilliating or disgraceful that they instead of openly admitting the changes, try to sneak it in and a forum member is the one that has to point it out.
as you mentioned its expensive to make, which is why i still feel sort of cheated for something, because if they make it anyway i still see no reason to keep it from the public, which is why i suggested having it unlockable ingame somehow, because if you cant then it seems like the value money more than actual dedication to the game, which eventually is what bothers me the most about it, the whole ‘‘it doesnt matter that you have been with us sine the start of tech alpha for a year, all we care about is how much you pay us’’
All I care about is being able to make this the biggest and best game we can make it. And game developers are bloody expensive! We tried paying them in Oreos and it only worked one month.
Oh sorry, it is indeed not as clear as i thought. With “this” I mean connecting something important like a playable race (even if it is just a variation of an existing “basic” race) to a certain backing tier that costs significantly more than the basic game. As I already said ~+50% of the basic price should be the highest tier that should still affect your ingame appearance in any way.
Yeah it might indeed be a bit extreme, but as you already mentioned: you always got increased beacon size with a better backing tier but the exclusive tools, wearables and weapons (things that activly affected the gameplay) were accessible with the first 3 backing tiers. Adding something similar to the 5th backing tier (which is about 500% more expensive) is definitely something that breaks the game for me, regardless if this race is just cosmetic or not.
Those are core mechanics and not features in my opinion.
I don’t even for a second believe that the dev’s need to clear every decision and idea through the community. It’s amazing that they accept the level of feedback and suggestions that they do, already. I think that everybody needs to remember that game development studios are a risky buisness to begin with, and they will do what ever it takes to insure their bottom line is secure. That’s not necessarily being “shady”, that’s buisness. We may have invested a small sum of money as backers, but we are not the share holders and we are not the shot callers. Again, it’s amazing that they accept the level of input that they do, but they don’t owe it to us.
You can say this all you want ;). It’s not the business model that most games, especially kickstarter games, will follow. Just like Havok already said:
Also…
One of you seems to be wrong here.
And @Predatoxic, don’t worry about it . It doesn’t help that there are many emotions flying around this thread for some reason.
And @Havok40k, I totally agree. Suddenly wishing I had much more disposable income and I’m now very jealous of @Tahru.
We don’t even know what the exclusive race will be, nor do we know what the rest of the races look like. I suggest waiting it out. I can see why some of you may be upset though:
“Getting in at this early stage also brings exclusive benefits that won’t be available after launch.”
“You will be able to play as a special race just for high-level backers, with a unique look and gameplay benefit.”
At first glance these words kind of scared me .
But then again there’s also signed artwork. As a current art gallery student I interview some of the artists that we host in our gallery, but we mostly ask them questions of how they support themselves. A handful of them were able to make a living out of their artwork, but most of them had side jobs or became professors/curators
I think I can understand why chieftain would cost that much. The cost of having this piece of art rarely satisfies the time it took for the artist to make it.
I would so be up for spending 300 more dollars as my support for the artists in Wonderstruck… Just not at this time right now . Oil painting classes drained me already.
