Character height in first person perspective

So I just got the game, and I’ve run around a number of worlds just checking things out. One thing that immediately struck me was that the character seems awfully short. I could be wrong, but from the first person view characters appear to be about a block and a half tall to eye height. This means seeing up and over slopes is fairly restricted, and the camera is extremely close to the grass when moving through it, which restricts a lot of screen space. It feels kind of unnatural.

Does anyone else feel like the characters are a bit short?

Hm, haven’t played for a couple weeks, but I hadn’t noticed whether the camera height is very short. The average adult human height is approximately 1.755 meters, and I imagine the devs are trying to go for humanoid characters, so the camera should just below the 1.75 blocks tall range.

Generally other games in this genre put the player at about 2 blocks tall. (I could be wrong) Just seems like the camera is very low to the ground for me. That was literally the first impression I got when I booted up my first game, so it was a fairly strong one.

Not that Boundless needs to emulate other games of course, just saying that’s been my experience. As a 6’2" guy, it feels very short to me, heh.

Yeah, probably just past experience and your own height that’s affecting it . But yeah, I think Boundless is just trying to go for its own thing.

fyi: the current camera height is 1.6m above the ground.
fyi: my real life eyes are also about 1.6m above the ground, who you calling short eh!? :rage:

I guess i can only hope they let us have some options for things like player height. That way we all feel comfortable with it.

(Just looked it up, I clock in at about 1.8m :stuck_out_tongue: )

Hm, good idea. If you can come up with some other factors to this, you could post the idea in the Suggestions category :grinning:

I’m an overly tall 1.98m … but that’s real life, I don’t want my character to be the same

I also dislike the feeling of being small in B< … Would be good to be at a hight of 1,75/1,8 …

or bind it to the hight of the race’s model we are playing … a smaller, grunty race has a hight of 1,5 while a more elegant large race has 1,9 ^^

Yeah see this is the sort of thing I’d like to see. I would be even more pleased if you were given a range of height to pick from for each race. so the shorter guys might have a height range of 1.3-1.6 and the taller ones 1.5-2.0 or something like that. Give diversity not only in race, but between members of a single race. As long as the range is always between 1 and 2 blocks tall so that there are no conflicts with collision or any other game mechanic.

I think people might be misunderstanding slightly here.

1.6m is the ‘eye’ height, the ‘player’ height (as in how tall the player actually is, physics/model) is 1.8m.

Arguably ‘any’ change in height is a change in game mechanic since it alters the location form which items are used (blocks placed, broken, arrows shot etc).

I don’t mind the height at all . I love feeling small around gigantic buildings!

japp, that would be a little bit proplematic, at least in balancing stuff … but to have different sized races at least (so 3 different possible sizes for example) would at least cut it down to 3 fixed values and would give an additional difference to the races and their feel ingame. Also, it would be cool to have a smaller race hiding in high grasses for it’s prey on pvp worlds :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Also, changing the height would make it harder to jump into those 2-high gaps.

That’s why i was saying the height range would need to stay between 1 and 2 blocks, to prevent issues with gameplay. The other thing to note, changing camera height does not necessarily mean you have to change collision height. As long as you don’t move it too much the disparity won’t be obvious.

This is actually a problem imo.

I’m glad it’s not just me :stuck_out_tongue:

Tweaking your field-of-view might make things feel different. FYI - I think the eye height was set to make it comfortable to look through a glass block (or hole) 1 block high. Either way - this is easily tweaked - I’m sure it’s something the designers will tweak when they do another balance pass on the player + movement.
