Thought I’d try the new gum on some gem slingbows, see how they did, thought they would be really good to have on them.
Now, I don’t know, to me the heavy weight makes them negative ! And the loss of speed. That to me doesn’t look good either. Feedback, please.

messing up on one, going to try to find it Okay, got the sapphire back in, not going to mess trying to get the double topaz one out.

Nice!
Agree heavy weight is avg, but im a range kinda guy. It does pump up the damage though so can be good for short range shotguns with the multiple projectile boon.

Also watch the critical effect on some bows. The sapphire for example has 0% crit chance, so the crit damage bonus is a wasted boon… unless you use crit pies with it.
didn’t know that. Will have to write that down in my notes. So much to learn in forging. Like forging the weapons and bombs, hate forging the tools.

Yeah there is a lot too it, but keep at it and it all starts to make sense!
Heavy projectile is a negative unless you are making a point blank shotgun build, even then not an ideal stat IMO.
my favorite regular use bow is…
- Light Flight
- Fly Fast
- Busy Bee
most people overlook this because you aren’t boosting the damage. Looking at the stats its easy to overlook how powerful this little thing is. I recommend using a Ruby Slingbow for this for the best results.
Its dead simple to craft, easier to craft because its a single boon. While it doesn’t directly add range, the lighter weight projectile and faster velocity do indeed give it extra range (technically they just allow it to use the full range the slingbow already has, but it gives the user a noticeable increase in effective distance). There’s no bullet drop really to compensate for, and it shoots like a machine gun making it super easy to kill pretty much everything on normal planets with a hunter based build. Only the top tier mobs will give you any trouble, but those will give you trouble with any bow that you use.
I highly recommend giving this type of bow a shot. If you’re interested in seeing one before you craft it feel free to PM me and I’d be happy to show off one of the bows. This is one of the highest DPS bows I have made, despite the fact that it doesn’t add any extra damage, the pure speed at which this bow functions puts it above any of the others I have crafted.

You can also put a projectile speed augment on a bow with heavy projectile that will take away the -10 speed from the bow

Heavy weight is also good if you like to hang from something and blast Wildstock.

Somewhat similar here, except i start with devestating damage then stick lightness to get either 2 of the 3 gums, usually aiming for busy bee.
Starting with DD means less resources spent, and is generally more powerful than simply going for lightness, but its definitly more complex.
On topic - i tend to agree, heavy projectile has been the bane of my existence when trying to forge with damage, I wish it would be moved to quirks instead.

I actually prefer heavy weight for most applications. I do tend to move into melee range for fights against everything but cuttletrucks and roadrunners.

What if it was moved to the venerable forging category then, so that it would be easier to aim for it on slingbows while also making it easier to specifically aim for DD?

I would be good with that.
That’s really the one area where heavyweight really shines. Otherwise the bullet drop is just too bad to justify for much else. Only other place where I see heavyweight as viable is as a shotgun build, the closer they get the more damage you do, and you can 1-2 shot pretty much everything in the game with a big heavyweight bow at pointblank range. However, once a wildstock for example charges, even if you kill him before he hits you, the action has still been initiated and will still hit you even though the wildstock is already dead. This also puts you at a disadvantage against ranged mobs where you literally have to get up in their face to kill them. In particular cuddletrunks have to be grappled and pulled to get them into range. This is generally a highly risky move against a high level cuddletrunk that will oneshot you, leaving you with about 50/50 odds on who wins.

But where is the fun in a guaranteed victory? Scraping by with the tiniest bit of hp left is pretty exciting in a fight.

Sure if you don’t care if you really win the fight and its all about hanging on by the seat of your pants, then by all means go for it. I’m not here to stand in the way of what you think is fun. But if you’re after reliable consistent results against all targets, then heavyweight simply isn’t the right fit. That doesn’t necessarily make it bad, but it does make it very niche in where it is useful. If you want to carry around a backup bow with heavyweight for those rare times where it is actually useful there is nothing wrong with that. I just wouldn’t recommend it as a primary bow.

I always carry at least two bows, fists and grapple with me, so having it to use when I do hang from a tree or cliff would come in handy. When on level 6 planets and I have a chance with elementals, I will hand and toss bombs at them until they drop low and then I can kill them easy with my bow or fists. That would be a help also.
I don’t think it is something that I want to make often.
I’m not one for the in your face, lets go till the end type of fighting player, I prefer to run, sneak around and try to ambush them but if my health drop below half, I’m out of there. I prefer to live and fight another day as the saying goes.
I was thinking of doing something like this but with a blink bow.

YEEEHAW!
Jokes aside, doing that in particular is great fun.
I love the heavy weight shotguns. I use them against everything but roadrunners. But I run a straight tank/dmg build. And my main grapple is hookshot. So cuttles don’t stay far from me plus I can take 3 hits from wildstock before I have to worry. And also cuttles can’t one shot or even two shot me. Nothing can actually. Worst is the debuffs from spitters. But I also heal myself so again no worries
Another fun thing is to take your grabble and when close to a deep hole and a big goat, elemental, one of the huge ones and grapple him and pull him into that pit. He’s pitching a fit and you get to have goat meat for supper, LOL.
Or, grapple your son accidently and pull him off a cliff. Fortunately, he landed in water. I still laugh, he doesn’t. He’ll get over it, someday.
