Grapple Comparison With Video (WIP)

A work in progress post comparing and empirically measuring all the grapples of boundless

HUGE thanks to @Dzchan94 who provided both the idea and all the grapples used for testing! You’re awesome man!

At a Glance:
Short Range But Fast

  • Copper
  • Silver
  • Topaz
    Balanced
  • Titanium
  • Amethyst
  • Emerald
  • Ruby
    Long-Range But Slow
  • Iron
  • Sapphire
    Hook Shots
  • Gold
  • Diamond

Definitions:

  • H Range= The Horizontal distance a grapple can travel and still latch on
  • V Range= The Vertical distance a grapple can travel and still latch on
  • M= Meters… Each block in boundless is 1 m³ so Blocks=Meters
  • S= Seconds… yup ^^
  • mps= meters per second
  • Projectile Life= The time it takes the grapple to travel it’s maximum range
  • Projectile Speed= Max Range divided by Projectile Life
  • Reel Time= The time the grappled took to move the player 10.2 m (more on this later)
  • Reel Speed= 10.2 m divided by Reel Time

The nitty-gritty stats as well as flavor descriptions and potential uses:
go on… click on them… they don’t bite… Much =P

[details=Basic Metal Grapples]
Copper Grapple:
Shortest Range but with okay speed… good for minor threat evasion
H Range--------------11.00m
V Range--------------13.00m
Projectile Life-------0.19s
Projectile Speed—57.89mps
Reel Time------------3.53s
Reel Speed----------2.89mps

Iron Grapple:
Good Range considering how cheap they are to make… However it has the slowest reel speed. Good for exploration / building
H Range--------------21.00m
V Range--------------16.00m
Projectile Life-------0.50s
Projectile Speed—42.00mps
Reel Time------------9.01s
Reel Speed----------1.13mps[/details]

Precious Metal Grapples

Silver Grapple
An upgrade in every way to the copper grapple, however it has a shorter range than the iron grapple.
H Range--------------16.00m
V Range--------------17.00m
Projectile Life-------0.20s
Projectile Speed—80.00mps
Reel Time------------2.07s
Reel Speed----------4.93mps

Gold Grapple (Hook-Shot)
Hook shots auto real which limits their swing-ability but have an increased real speed. Good for traversing rough terrain quickly. It has the 3rd fastest real speed
H Range--------------16.00m
V Range--------------17.00m
Projectile Life-------0.30s
Projectile Speed—53.33mps
Reel Time------------0.36s
Real Speed----------28.33mps

Titanium Grapple
Great all-arounder if gems are not available… Kind of expensive to make
H Range--------------26.00m
V Range--------------27.00m
Projectile Life-------0.42s
Projectile Speed—61.90mps
Reel Time------------1.13s
Reel Speed----------9.03mps

Gem Grapples (Short – Medium Range)

Topaz Grapple
Fastest grapple in the game… Can be used to catapult the player into the air / out of holes and caves. Its usefulness is limited by its short range that is identical to silver.
H Range--------------16.00 m
V Range--------------17.00 m
Projectile Lifev-----0.15 s
Projectile Speed—106.67mps
Reel Time------------0.14 s
Reel Speed----------72.86 mps

Amethyst Grapple
Almost identical to titanium but with over double the reel speed
H Range--------------26.00 m
V Range--------------26.00 m
Projectile Life-------0.41 s
Projectile Speed—63.41 mps
Reel Time------------0.48 s
Reel Speed----------21.25 mps

Diamond Grapple (Hook-Shot)
Second and final Hook-Shot. Second fastest grapple in the game with the same range as titanium… Great for catapulting the player out of holes and caves.
H Range--------------26.00 m
V Range--------------27.00 m
Projectile Life-------0.33 s
Projectile Speed—78.79 mps
Reel Time------------0.30 s
Reel Speed----------34.00 mps

Gem Grapples (Long Range)

Emerald Grapple
Fastest reel speed of the long range grapples. Can be used to catapult the player out of holes and caves however the timing is less forgiving
H Range--------------36.00 m
V Range--------------34.00 m
Projectile Life-------0.50 s
Projectile Speed—72.00 mps
Reel Time------------0.43 s
Reel Speed----------23.72 mps

Ruby Grapple
Best all-arounder in the game high projectile speed means near point-and-click-aiming and boasts the greatest vertical range in the game
H Range--------------36.00 m
V Range--------------38.00 m
Projectile Life-------0.42 s
Projectile Speed—85.71 mps
Reel Time------------1.09 s
Reel Speed----------9.36 mps

Sapphire Grapple
Massive horizontal range however it has the slowest projectile speed and its vertical range suffers because of it. Great for cave diving.
H Range--------------40.00 m
V Range--------------20.00 m
Projectile Life--------2.17 s
Projectile Speed—18.43 mps
Reel Time------------1.16 s
Reel Speed----------8.79 mps

These Groups are also how the Grapples Smart Stack Together ^^

Bests / Worsts:

  • Farthest Horizontal Range: Sapphire Grapple
    @ 40m
  • Farthest Vertical Range: Ruby Grapple
    @ 38m
  • Fastest: Topaz Grapple
    @ Stupid Fast
  • Slowest Reel: Iron Grapple
    @ OMG WHY?!
  • Shortest Horizontal Range: Copper Grapple
    @ 11m
  • Shortest Vertical Range: Copper Grapple
    @ 13m

My Top Picks:

  1. Ruby
  2. Emerald
  3. Titanium

I’m glad the grapples have served a good purpose.

It’s all on you. I would’ve just done a simple test and reach a conclusion. Never thought you could compare them to this point. Plus you produce good content. I would be glad if more people learned how to play because of your videos.

By the way, you are added to the beacon at the grapple testing range… Feel free to retrieve your gently used grapples at any time =P… They are not all there at the moment but will be the next time I log on

Sure, I bet @Karokendo wants to give them a test run. So feel free to add Karokendo too.

Love this video! You’re awesome!

I’ve been using the Ruby Grapple for a week or two now. I sampled most of the others and decided it was my favourite - your video pretty much confirms it.

I do however spend a lot of my time rappelling down caverns, so your tip with the Sapphire Grapple sounds like a plan.

I’ve found that the hookshots are great for crossing those pesky lava lakes that are just too wide to jump across. If you use a grapple with a low reel speed, you run the risk of swinging through the lava as you pull yourself in. That isn’t the case with the fast hookshots.

Anyway, your information is much appreciated as always. Buying up all your stuff is my way of saying thanks!

This is awesome, very much appreciated info! I had no idea about the hook-shot grapples. I thought it was a bug first time I used my Diamond Grapple. Thx!:smiley_cat:

Is this still accurate?

Nope, not anymore
