Honestly, I want to miss them. At least as long as the devs don’t build them like we have to.
I think I’m kind of a purist in that aspect^^
Also, I don’t want them to take time to build stuff if they could be working on features of the game.
What they do in their freetime on the other hand is their choice.
Minecraft clearly showed that a group of players can (and will) make amazing things so I really don´t see any need for dev- (or pre-) made structures/cities in 1.0.
Also:
This! People will naturally come together for trading, grouping etc. at a place that is well built, located at an easily acessible spot, offers a wide range of services, etc. and form a capital completely on their own. (This worked in EvE Online and I don´t see any reason why this wouldn´t work in B<)
I would still argue a hub world is a very important aspect to have for 1.0. There are going to be new players, and a hub world will be a very important way to give them a good impression before being shat into a god forsaken hillbilly backwoods area of lleb with like 40 monsters trying to eat them all at once. (I’m exaggerating, but you get the point) A hub world would just be a great thing to have regardless of if you want it used as a trading/housing mecca or not.
Simple solution here: make the starting point a tutorial zone that upon completion portals you to a random world/location.
This could be a linear scripted event involving basic npc (that would not appear anywhereally else In game)
Example: you’ve created and personalized your new character- begin game in a small village. You receive a basic tutorial from an NPC chieftain of your tribe as well as a little back story to the game- your tribe is sending you away on an adventure to far or some such. You learn all the basic tutorial bits and confirm that you are ready to begin. (Cut to cinematic) your tribe opens your portal to a random new land. Just then, a horn is heard- camera pans to a Titan coming over a nearby mountain, straight toward your village! As it’s raining down destruction on your village, your chieftain realizes all hope is lost. He shoves you through the portal and closes it behind you. You have no home to return to. It is now up to you alone to continue your tribes legacy. (End cut-scene, begin your adventure!)
Literally just made this up as an example of how a starting location could work without also having to function as a hub or even exist in the game world at all. Entire tutorial level could be entirely client side even if need be.
