Whenever I need some kind of rock to build something I head out with an AE hammer to mine some. And whenever I need sedimentary rock, all I find is igneous rock. And whenever I try to find metamorphic rock, all I find is sedimentary rock. And so on.
How do I find the rock type I need? Do they depend on hight? Or terrain? Is it possible to know where to mine to have the majority of the rock be the type I want?
The different types are more common in different elevations and under different geographic features, in my experience.
There’s always ‘some’ degree of mixing, but I believe the predominant type will vary based on those parameters.
Try digging under plains / lakes / deserts / mountains on the same planet and you should find that in general the balance of each type changes. So under grassy plains for example, sedimentary might be more uncommon and say, meta more common as the first ‘layers’ of rock depth, and then deeper down it might turn around and igni becomes more common.
I’m not sure if the same patterns hold for all planets, but if you’re having trouble finding a specific rock type it might be worth a shot trying under a different biome.

@Arkhainn is spot on!
What I tend to do is grapple around looking for the sides of mountains, hills, or whatever. You’ll be able to see the layers of rock and their thickness along those walls. Worked amazing for me on nii zed ka looking for rust slate color.

That is what I do. I just go to a planet and if I can wander all over it, looking at the hills and exposed sides to see what colors are there. I get most of my various rocks from the mining I do for the ores and coal I hunt.
I swim along the rivers looking for copper, coal or iron, generally find copper and then just start to mine, I get so much rock that I toss probably 80% of it as I mine. If I don’t I would have to build a base five times the size I have for the rocks. As you mine you will find all three types as you go up or down.
I would focus on the aspect of mining, to get the ores you need. Even in level 2 planets you get lots of copper that can be traded, some iron and coal that will help a lot in making tools for personal usage.
The boundless crafting site (hope this link works) http://boundlesscrafting.com/ gives the info of what types of rocks and colors are on each planet, you can focus on them or on the type of ores you want to find. Your level, skills and protections will be a guide in what planets you can handle as you advance.
Good luck
You could always sell me the rocks. My shop is always buying at 1c each, every color and type.
I usually spend 100000 coins or so a day restocking my rock baskets.
Where is your shop at? I’d love to get rid of some of them that are taking up room.
Bliss’ Bling.
Portals from:
Biitula - PS Hub, East side outer ring, coordinates: 695N, 435E, Altitude: 90
Beckon - Aquatopia, Shop Portals area by the embassy, ground floor, coordinates: 1038N, 743E, Altitude: 73
Pheminorum - Blacklight, portal area, upper floor, north side, coordinates: -1278N, 714E, Altitude: 72
I keep three rock baskets and try to restock a few times a day:
The other baskets I only restock when I run out of whatever it is they’re buying, but that’s not very often unless I’m working on some large project.
Mining rock or trunk is like getting resources. Remember or even save locations that have plenty of rock you want.
I even went as far as making a base sitting on my favorite black meta on lasaina to save myself trouble of looking for it.
Will stop in there either today or tomorrow, have a lot on my plate to do today in setting up a new shop in the Leyden Market and making some ingredients to sell. So probably tomorrow.
lvl 1-4 worlds, mega fast brew + Titanium 3x3 Hammer. start in edge of hill and go crazy. Keep going untill you start finding what you want in masses and stay that altitude.
lvl 5-6 worlds, Persisting pie + mega fast brew, Gem 3x3 +20 dmg or more. same tactic.
Just go ham!
