I planted kindling mass kernels in refined decorative gravel, with lava underneath. ( For higher yield)
I didn’t increase/decrease crop or seed yield, but it says my crop yield is 110% and my seed yield is 55%
I actually prefered to have my seed yield at 100 , and I don’t see why it isn’t. I only increased general yield.
I think I’m misunderstanding farming here. Help would be appreciated. 
Has to be on same level.

Underneath won’t work unfortunately, you’ll need to put the lava alongside it.
I like to plant it in rows of two-wide with a rock or gleam border between, like this:
NOTE: Farming Epic skill grants +20% crop yield
B= Border, chiseled with lava inside
G=Gravel
BBBB
BGGB
BGGB
BGGB
BBBB
Unless it’s in the bottom of the block itself.

I have a farm set up for 100% seed return on kindling mass, if you want to have a look at it, let me know
I’m at work ATM but if nobody posts I will post a pic of my setup which is sustained.
The trick is those extra hiden bitumen that @DaOne82 marked with arrows
In my case those bitumen are the ones in the front around the marble, and in the oposite side of the farm I hide them with the wall

Also pay attention to the order of the border, you can’t have bitumen on both sides of the field.

What is your crop % on these setups?
umm sustained is 35% crop 100% seed… that sounds about right

Yeah, 35%. Plus the extra crop yield from the farming epic skill, brings it up to 55%

This also maximises the plantable area (most crops planted per plot).
