Kovah project: Reopening soon

Put me in coach…

I haven’t been on much lately as I’m redecorating my entire house, but I’ll get some time to relax and build soon!

Personally, I’d vote 2 (for the wall) just because I’d be down for contributing in a simple way. If I and some other people were working on that essential (albeit menial) construction, and others were working on the districts, we could get the project done in an efficient way.

We tried to split some people on the wall and some on the districts and we ended up with partial builds everywhere. I want to focus the entire group on one task and get it finished before moving to the next. I may have some people linger on detailing and landscaping each build after its finished, but ultimately we will focus on one at a time.

Makes sense. I would place district priority over walls in that case, but I’m just scared that the buildings I would make won’t look good. I’m mostly good at designing flat interiors rather than detailed exteriors :relieved:

Is there any idea of a time that this project could be reopened? Or is this just going to be an everyone do it when you can project?

There should be no problem if everyone builds whenever he/she has time, I think it´s kinda necessary to allow everybody to build whenever he/she has time due to the different timezones we live in.
You should just make sure that the stuff you build alings with the concept of the city (we already had to remove some structures that someone built without asking because they were built on the outlined path of a road)

In 5 days I will take a list of everybody who has asked to participate to james and ask him to amend the permissions file. That may take a day or so before he gets around to it, but once I have confirmation we will begin construction. At the moment, it seems like we will start with the gates houses, then the wall. I think the pattern for the wall is repetitive enough that it should be alright to work on without too much gidance.

IIRC, @Vastar was heading up the wall project, so any requests for details should be directed to him.

I can already build in Kovah. Do I need to contact James again?

Nope.
Did you get some new ideas for your slum?

I had some ideas, but the ping for me is so bad that I keep falling into the water :joy:

Ok so… the question that seems to be on everybody’s mind but nobody answering: Is the Kovah project dead? James announced that relatively soon, new worlds with the new resources generation will be released after the C++ build is finished, and that the currently live worlds will go (moved to legacy universe?)

What this means for the Kovah project is… I really don’t know. I know a lot of you want to see this (overly) ambitious project come to completion, and I also know many of you are eager to move on to the new worlds. I feel a bit like I have failed the community by allowing this project to remain in stasis for so long and never completing what we set out to do. If, however, we decide to take on a sort of Kovah 2.0, we could take many of the lessons we learned about world generating and city planning and building and make a true masterpiece.

So I will leave it to you guys to decide: do we continue what we have started and build a grand city for the legacy universe, or do we wait for now until the 1.0 worlds are ready?

Let´s Vote?

  • Continue the Kovah project in the (soon to be) legacy world
  • Make a Kovah 2.0 on a 1.0 world

I think we should say goodbye to the old Kovah and wait for the 1.0 worlds.

All the new blocks and features will probably motivate a lot of people to help with the project and enable a lot more options for creativity. (Real ore to mine and process for the mining/industry district. Plinths for the trading district. No more half trees due to the world regeneration. World wrapping…)

I’m veering toward agreeing with Vastar; I know that this appears to be my year to travel for business, so I won’t be logged in a lot for the foreseeable future thanks to not carrying my own system on the road (too much trouble to get through airport security) and horrible hotel wi-fi in general.

I’m leaning toward a 1.0 world as well, but the part where they said there will be several iterations before the true 1.0 worlds are ready has me really concerned. I don’t want to see us make big progress on a city and then the devs tell us that a world is getting re-generated for some new features and all of our progress will be lost.
@james, if we were to build something designated for the 1.0 worlds, would it be possible to save it and place it in a new world? As a sort of safeguard against having to restart.

We have a lot of opportunity to do some more groundwork inside the world builder as well. For example, if we can come up with the ideal road layout, the roads could be laid down during world creation (assuming it’s not a game balance issue). Probably the same for building foundations, too (though, IMO that’s probably too prescriptive)

Also need to remember that we probably won’t have infinite mode on the new worlds either, so it’ll take quite a lot longer to build anything

If we can get a head start, we can get the bulk of the city placed before we lose inf build.
