Thankfully, they’re not too bright… they keep falling in!

I was always made fun of for running slaughterhouses. Put cows in a 2x2x2 pit and then dig out the lowest block of the wall. Cows are 1.5 blocks high, babies are only 1 block high. So you breed them in the pit and the babies get pushed out (I usually used a second pit). Then you can murder to your hearts content with aoe type things without having to worry about killing off your original source.
