I’m moving the private universe discussion over as its really moving away from the World Update Frequency topic @jon-eric started.
If you don’t think there would be a mass exodus to private universes in the same way so many migrated to Sovereign worlds, you’d be quite surprised. There are already far too many planets for the population as it is, not that anyone not specifically invited to a private server would even know that universe exists.
mass exodus? i dont think so, why?
- players who want to play and build alone renting a sov, i know there are several sov planet locked, for private use only
- private universe with no portal network? are you hardcore enough to solo hunt and fuel your portals? or have fun manually warping to other 49 worlds

- private universe = NO SHOPS !!! sounds fun? are you hardcore enough to craft anything you want? farming all ingredients? i dont think so

The entire game population barely is enough to make up a private universe, so I don’t see what there is to lose. You might get a rejuvenation of people who want to wall themselves off from the people torturing them. Multiple universes of 40 people is more than 40 people.
It might make people recruit people to their private universes, and increase the player base. People who want to make little universes for kid friendly play. Plus, there was supposed to be mod capabilities. Mitigating the grind might pull people into some universes.
The game really doesn’t seem to work all that well as an mmo. All I ever saw was fighting and trolling, covered up by a veneer of car salesman niceness that was self serving.
If the 40 people playing all like the way things are, they shouldn’t have a problem setting one up or staying in the current one assuming it keeps going. I think people just don’t like the idea of letting people they don’t like have a good time without them.
if i remember correctly private universe is private in all aspects, you cannot bring items to private universe and cant take items from private to official ![]()
It wouldn’t be one person in the universe, it would be a group, and from what I experienced back in the day, a Guild (for example) didn’t need shops because there were plenty of people doing different things. As a matter of fact, I am hardcore enough to supply 99% of my own items. The exceptions are color sprays, because goo farming is a pain IMO, and Lucient weapons because I’m usually too busy doing all the other things to hit the exos. Recently, I needed stuff for my base after moving it because I switched colors. Wound up making it all because no one had what I needed in stock, so shops were useless.
Since the update seeing the light of day is virtually nil right now because it is still not ready for release and there is no development beyond the “tuning” Jon-Eric is doing; its a moot point anyways.
The idea of a mass exodus to private universes just as many folks bought sovereigns and left for those is directly related to population size itself. The larger the player base, the more populated the worlds would be which would further incentivize more communities to be built around the persistent, base planets. You would still have communities that would prefer to buy a planet or an entire universe and live on their own but I’d be quite a large population would be driven to stay within the base planets due to the economy, the community, and more.
Updates = more people in MMO
Private Universe = less in the MMO
Pretty simple
I myself would agree with this. If I had my own private universe with say 3-4 planets, I might link it to the “regular” universe if it was possible, but would rarely come to it.
as i said above - private universe is private in all aspects, you cannot move items between regular (official ) and private (i think it was clearly stated in 1st post about planned private universe
- you can move items freely between official and rented - sovereign
- you cant move items between official and private
but honestly - all this convo about private universe is clearly pointless, it belonged to old planned updates that are no longer planned or considered unless stated differently ![]()
Who knows what he future holds, anything can happen. Monumental might shift focus, they may sell the game or maybe they’ll open source the game, I myself try to remain hopeful.
The private universes according to James could all connect to one central private server and create a large universe outside of the MMO, at least the way I understood it. With that being possible I’m not totally against private servers, but I do think it would become a logistical nightmare and there is no guarantee every private server would want to connect to all the others, so as great of an idea as it is, it would still fragment the game pretty bad.
I also think if the game was to shut down for whatever reason, having the private server option to allow some form of the MMO to continue would be alright to me.
Anyways, not sure how any of this reflects the OP, but if it came down to it, as painful as a universe reset would be, I’d be ok with it if it was the last resort to save the game or get new players. We all know, what we have now just isn’t working.
most important - having private universe with everything modded who will be buying creative worlds to test builds and forgingforging?
do creative worlds killed private universe idea? money from renting creative vs nothing?
do you see that playing at private universe gives nothing to devs? no money from sov rent and sov fuel, no money from renting creative. no money from GC?
GC applies to private servers.
private universe builds multi-tier worlds and that’s why it wouldn’t be connectable (one of a few reasons probably)
they would have to change the world building procedure first to match MMO universe
i love this game as it is, to see other players roaming around, to see awesome builds, to checking known and new shops, to see players taking a break and coming back, sov coming and letting go, exo coming and vanished into void. this is Boundless for me, living world, breathing living world even if with only few of us remain ![]()
private universe? with moding? where you can setup whatever you want? spawn chests of oort to build own portal network? for self and few friends? spawning most rare building mats to build wonders? who will be admire what you can build without any effort? just several free creative worlds ![]()
When I moved these over, they got a little out of order my apologies.
It depends on what all you can change in private universes. If allowed (basically) full control, I could see it reviving the game. Give us mod tools and let me change all variables in the game. Crafting times, recipes, mining speed/block placement speed, plots per cubit/level, item durabilities, beacon fuel duration, etc.
The early and mid game are awful. You have nearly zero plots, gathering and placing speeds are stupid slow, crafting times and recipes aren’t beginner friendly. Want to get more players? Keep the level of entry low. Mod it so that if you’re working within a plot, a simple totem can one hit any block that you’ve placed. So you can modify your home base with ease. Keep gathering times moderate, something akin to Minecraft speeds so people can actually gather enough resources to build something. Give new players like 100+ plots to start. Make all crops faster to grow and profit seeds. Make painting blocks much easier.
Change the business model from gleam club & private planets to server hosting. That way they can keep the planet generation proprietary and still have an income source from it. Your private universe server price would be a combination of factors, player cap, # of planets, exo planet frequency, etc.
I think if they work like we were trying to work and get the Portals integrated into the Public Universe like we did for Creative worlds that there won’t be issues with a Private Universe expansion. Imagine walking around and seeing portals online that allow you to visit the private planet… I think it could help a lot in expansion in the long run.
I see private universes as an option that’ll only leave the main universe feel emptier than it can already feel at times.
If the game was bigger? Sure it might fix some stuff related to overpopulation, but it could already risk splitting the community up into a whole bunch of groups that never intermingle in any ways, and simply stick to their own universes.
If they’re completely split from the main universe? That only makes the above problem worse, and sort-of ruins the point of an ‘MMO’.
It would be so disorienting to walk into a heavily modded private universe, but I’m all for it.
