Q&A: Character Progression

Yeah, GW2 is an example of a game that has a bunch of great progression mechanics. I loved the leveling experience (their end game wasn’t as pleasant, though)

Never got around to endgame

Got distracting by pesky things like school and friends and then my computer died.

I know I used probably 50% of my time hunting down points of interest going for specefic achievments and styling my charracter though.

End game is horrible indeed. But I enjoy the daily/monthly achievement things, it’s a nice reason to log in without making logging in feel like a job (aka wow garrisons). And the zone achievements are cool but would be hard to implement in procedurally generated game like Boundless.

If you can make sub-biomes with a one time spawn restriction that shouldn’t be too impossible though.

I have no idea how hard implementing restricted spawn amount on areas though.

Unfortunately I have to disagree … The daily / monthly feeled a lot like a unnecessary duty. It was/is the only way to get laurels and the tasks themself are repetitive and monotonous. i really hope we don’t get that system for B<

But if there’s a one time spawn restriction, how do other players get the achievement?

When they find the specefic place in the specefic world? I was thinking something like from time to time add a special sub-biome to a single world and then at the same time add an achievment for finding it. That could be kinda fun and encourage exploration.

So changing the world configuration post-launch? Eh…I don’t think people would appreciate that, even if it’s for an achievement haha. I think if something like this were to be done, it’d need to regen. You could just incorporate tiers for the achieve, which several games do already. Find it once, 10 times, 100 times, 1000 times, etc.

No just like putting them into the new worlds that are spawned. I should really make a suggestion for this cause damn it could be discussed in details.

We shall see if I remember it tomorrow.

I thought the plan was 50 worlds at launch. So 50 people could get this achieve and it’d be given on a first-come-first-serve basis. And how do you combat private rented servers where people can just add in the sub-biomes and get the achieve?

Please do make a post haha, I’d love to see some more details because I guess I’m just not getting it right now.

Ah no I mean everyone would get it when reachign that specefic place.

Oh! When you mentioned spawn-restriction I thought you were talking about an ITEM or something! But you just mean the biome itself only spawns once (or not at all) per world and you get the achieve when you reach it? YES. I like this haha. Sorry for not understanding originally!

Now after reading all the posts I came to the conclusion that “it should be engaging” isn’t really a great answer to “how should it be to be engaging” XD So, if permitted, a second try to elaborate on that^^

For me a game is engaging if I can do whatever I want without arbitrary restrictions.
Like the invisible walls some games have because they couldn’t design the map good enough.

Having the ability to do everything alone or everything in a group goes in the same direction. If I want to do it the hard way and be a lonely mercenary (who can do everythign to some degree because of hard work) then let me do that.
If I want to do absolutely everything with my best buddies. Then let me do that.

There doesn’t have to be an extra feature that supports such activities. Just nothing (which is arbitrary) that restricts it.

I think you got away from his question. It’s not about what is engaging. It’s about the progression model, isn’t it? Even when I also like no limitations

This tells me he asks about what we think is an engaging progression model^^

Kh khm, Im… Pixelmon pro. (Minecraft)
Example- In the web you can find tons of “Builds” for each Pokemon.
But I don’t respect people who just watch\read someones guides about effective builds which provide in battle advantages, I respect people who by themselves build their own pokes using their own brain.
MY ANSWER-
If after 1.0 on Forums people will share “Builds of character progression”… Many people will be dissappointed.
Also in Wow, as I know, you can easily ruin your character by choosing bad skills… So yeah, If miners with Guided Build will be most popular…People who try to have fun and experience coolest Miners adventures, one day just close the game with thought “What did I wrong?”
Miner just example. NO BUILDS!!!111111

Can’t tell if this post is satire or not.

Having a system where you put points in different skills creates builds by definition. If you mean you don’t want any meta builds, I can fully appreciate that.

A solid base to expand on.

This is meant for the launch version and beyond.

This as one example:

  • You should work the base profession trees/skills in parallel with the post launch ones to assure that there won’t be need for major rework or even remaking of the existing ones, because the synergies between the old and new ones don’t work as intended or even make old ones useless in post launch releases/updates.

ok, you got me. But i don’t see the connection between your answer and player progression. It’s more a feature you want to see. isn’t it?

It’s exactly not a feature^^ it’s more a philosophy which can and should also be applied to progression. Especially progression because it’s such a big part of any game.

For example the thing with the specialization of 3 skill trees. That’s progression related isn’t it?

Deciding if you want to level alone or in a group.
Deciding if you want to be mediocre (unless you sink countless weeks or months of playtime into the game) and self sustaining or good in certain aspects with the need of working with others to survive.

This freedom makes a game for me interesting and consequently the progression.
And the current system restricts me in this freedom which takes a significant part away from the fun for me. Which leads me to most likely play it less.

Or to say it another way. Just because it’s also related to other things too doesn’t mean it’s not related to progression^^
