My opinion on this is that it’s good to have durability, but not so good to have great weapons (that also, hopefully, look fantastic) disappear. So, why can’t they break and become ugly (worn-looking, like irl) and then we have to mine/buy/trade for mats in order to repair them. Either that, or take it to somebody who has the mats to repair it? This achieves the same goal of having to mine mats without the, imho, disastrous effect of losing something one worked so hard for.
