Reminds me of what Blizzard did in World of Warcraft : Battle For Azeroth.
Bwonsamdi, the Troll Loa of Death replaces the classic Spirit Healer (the NPC only ghost-players can see, which allows you to spend some gold to get back to life if you don’t wanna get to your body by yourself) in the most recent zones. As a side bonus, he gets to make fun of the dead players, often with class-specific remarks.
As a warlock, I got to hear quite often “oh, did ya forgot your little soul stone, mon?”. 
I don’t know if I’d like the Sanctum Elder to laugh and facepalm, though.
Might be better to go towards more encouraging things.
