I wonder whether I will have to replant the ones that got caught half-grown by the update.

In other words, is the final color decided upon planting or with the last successful tick?

Upon harvest I believe. It’s like chopping any plant, the drop math is done at the time of chopping.

Edit: like same thing as when you try to craft refined gleam with more than one color. There’s nothing set until it’s done.

u see the final color before harvesting, when it’s fully grown - I suppose you mean the last growing stage rolls the color?

it would make sense since it always says “black” throughout all the growing stages

I can confirm that color is rolled at the end of growing - one of my bats, that was half-grown before the fix, has just turned green and is ready to harvest after the fix.
