We added an invisible barrier to stop people from exploring un-generated regions.

In the future all worlds will be wrapped - so this will not be a problem.

Were things, already built in the ungenerated regions, deleted when you implemented that?

I guess not, since the implemented the wall and din’t delete the landscape.
(i think)

A few worlds had been explored beyond the originally generated region.

–tl;dr–

[When players went beyond the limit of the generated world the servers would generate the new regions on demand. Originally the servers were configured to generate full fidelity worlds - but as the servers hardware were configured for hosting (low memory) not generation (high memory) they would regularly crash out of memory. So we configured the servers to generate flat worlds which requires no additional memory. However some players would still explore to huge ranges into the flat world, 32km+. This gave us another problem that when we needed to migrate the world’s data for a game update - some worlds would take an order of magnitude more time to process - because they contained huge amounts of (useless) flat data. This was just wasting us time for zero player benefit. Hence the invisible walls. Wrapping FTW!]

I guess that means you did delete the things outside it to safe time migrating the world data?
Or rather you just didn’t migrate it, which is kind of deleting^^ Or did I read that wrong?

but was it deleted?

I’m not sure what happened to the data. I think it probably got migrated.

Kinda cool^^ So there might be structures on some worlds outside of the borders which can’t be accessed xD

Oh god @james are you saying the we will have an infinate world and as far as we go will generate or render new paths or more terrain? how can this be done? as I know in some other games going into the end of the map you just fall into nothing, out of the map, and lately respawning in a safe place

I think you will need more powerful servers right?

It wont be in infinite world which auto-generates terrain as you need it, but a world which wraps around. They currently have an invisible barrier which prevents you from going into ‘no-mans-land’, but later on, this will wrap around to the other side of the world, effectively making it seem spherical like a real world.

Basically what that means is that, if you run in the same direction, you will eventually end up back where you started
