I think being able to chisel is one of the things that makes this game so utterly amazing I see Minecraft builds now and they make my soul cringe with their blocky edges lol
I like to make my builds as detailed as possible so , yes I chisel
I think chisel is one of the aspect which set boundless apart from other minecraft-like games.
We have priorities in playing boundless.
I personally like to build.
Prestige gained is an added bonus to my build
Ps. If i could chisel to even smaller detail, i would chisel all the way
My daughter keeps asking me to build in Minecraft with her… I feel really bad saying that I don’t really want to, purely for the reason that there is no chiseling (that and limited block styles/colours) and I just can’t express the detail I want to in a build.
Chiseling is one of the things that makes Boundless such a great game for building awesome looking stuff in (as our community has more than shown already!).
This is aimed at newish oorts:
chiseling can maybe be a little intimidating during the early oort years (so many chisels and effects) but practise helps.
Just plonk some blocks down and chisel away…experiment…try to copy the way blocks are in nature or in someone’s chiseled build that you admire.
Streamlining your chisel setup can also help.
As soon as you can afford it gogo gem chisels as you can basically get a full set of all needed chisels in one stack but same principle applies to non-gem tools…will just take up more inventory space.
this is my building setup:
from top left to bottom right: 1: unchisel/lattice/transform 2:square/slope/bevel 3: precise square/precise slope/precise bevel
then I have the same layout every session.
This just makes muscle memory so much easier.
I’ll also usually carry an identical stack of chisels so if one chisel breaks I have back up.
But heres the thing, minecraft is lame with out mods and they have mods that chisel the blocks into shapes and they have the chisel mod that changes the texture like the transform chisel here.
It would be cool to have a machine that did the chiseling for me, ie before its placed, but i know how blocks are placed in this game that wont really happen.
A change chisel machine that did the changing for hundred of blocks for me would be something I would like, a machine for regular chisels wouldn’t really work, it takes the human mind to be able to chisel the way we do.
They used to have that with Steps, Walls and Slabs… but changed it when all the extra shapes and chisels were introduced. I think with all the different shapes that can be made, it will make things very very difficult to place in the right orientation. I agree, it probably won’t happen.
To be fair In this, vanilla minecrafts as half slabs, stairs, fence posts, carpet. Can do alot with. For block shapes options boundless offers more vanilla wise. But toss in chisel n bits minecraft gets way more! So chisel n bits take 1 block unit and brakes up into 16x16x16 block units. Then to get bits break up. Regular blocks into bits. Then can mix different parts of the the together like lava vanes with glass in a pole shape. I can see this done in boundless as custom mesh data. Custom block id. With bit id data to fill in. For texturing just have the texture bits as if some ones uv wrapping in a 3d modeling program be same face locations.
Or be like me and use gems only for titanium and gems.
For the amount that i chisel its way to expensive to go for gems.
Depending on what im doing i can easily go trough 1-3 stacks of stone chisels alone in a day. Terra nova chiseling so far already had a cost of about 2-3 deco gleam chests of stone chisels alone.
I almost feel like this needed a third option
- I precise chisel
I chisel enough to get lava and water into my farms and add ramps for movement. But that’s about it.
My builds do look very Minecrafty but it doesn’t bother me at all.
You have a point. I had thought about it, but I didn’t think the votes would be so one sided.
Chiseling! There are so many shapes, you can’t create them by building large and use vanilla minecraft style…
that is such a beautiful build…also some lovely detail inside and underneath
I’m playing Boundless since the beta stage and use chisels from the moment they were added to the build. Still found new tricks with them (only few days ago I’m confirmed my theory that blocks I considered “unchisable” actually can be chiseled with gem tools ) And all this magic with transformation boon! You can use chiseling only just for sake of it (turning silver into the gold or one wood/stone to another is priceless!).
