Sounds a lot like the chisel tool from the MC mod Tinkers Construct. Unfortunately the wiki looks to be out of date and lacks pictures…

Yeah, I think too overkill. It’s cool, but I don’t want an inventory full of chisels. 
Another thought, the designs could have specific associations, for example:
• relating to the different types of magic
• relating to different tiers of worlds
• different letters/words in Oortian
• relating to different classes or professions
• or, they could just be a variety of cool designs. >_O haha
