Will there be offline worlds in 1.0?

Just like in minecraft, will we be able to have an offline world just for yourself if you wanted to without private servers? I think that you would draw a large user base from minecraft if offline was available for creative/hardcore purposes. I’m looking for the ability to build great structures if I don’t have much time or want to test an Idea without needing to do lots of mining, etc.

Another concept that I will bundle in is this: Instanced areas that are player specific. For example once you pass a boundary into an area all other players disappear and you will be in your own private world. Places you could use this are tutorials/dungeons/homes. I played a bit of Black Desert Online and I think that the house system was great. The main idea I wanted to borrow was this:

Player A builds a house, they decide to put an “instanced” area inside of the house and the door (or any entrance) has a one time pay lock, or a one time pay for a given time period. Once player B pays and enters the house, all players disappear and they are free to place and destroy blocks inside, however they cannot destroy anything outside of the instanced area, when they leave the house other players appear and they go off somewhere else. Player C decides they like the house also, they pay and enter the house to does the same as player B. Over time many other players come to this house and use it as a home. Player A returns to the lock and can take money out the lock (or just have the money appear in the inventory) and pay a flat tax rate and can use this money for other builds/tools/services.

Please leave any thoughts, suggestions or critiques.

Wouldent that mean devs need to make a program that procedual generates worlds cas evey world will be made in the wb

Probably, but they already are using procedural generation for the current and future worlds so I don’t see a problem with allowing people to just generate their own worlds but just confine the dimensions. If you think how long it takes to generate a world in the new world builder, I think it’s easily possible to allow people to generate worlds even if it takes a few minutes.

Its half procedural you still need to use nodes and stuff

There could be generic worlds that are predefined.

Just because you use nodes doesn’t mean it’s not fully procedural.
Procedural just means that you use an algorithm to produce a huge amount of data. In this case terrain.
You just choose the starting parameters of the algorithms with the nodes.

I think the rented private servers will have some form of user options as to how they’re set up in the first instance, I would imagine this will be some form of GUI where you can select a number of preset named biomes.

If offline servers were a thing, this should be all they would need for any easy setup. Add in the ability to load in your own WB files and I think that would cover all the bases.

What do you guy think of the second idea?

To be honest i dint really understand the second idea

  1. Player A builds a house
  2. Player A creates an instanced area inside the house, think of this like your own private server with nobody else in it
  3. Player A puts a lock on a door which you have to pay to unlock, the lock only unlocks for the player that pays, player A can choose to make it so that when you unlock the door it will lock again after a month or however long they want
  4. Player B pays money to unlock the door, they go inside the house and can do whatever they want, but they can’t build outside the instanced area. They can’t see any other players unless they invite them into their version of the house.
  5. Any other player can enter the house, but they will have their own instanced area.
  6. When player A comes back, they can decide to take money out of the lock to use for whatever they want.

Ah okay kinda understand now

I think I understand what you’re idea is, but if I do understand it right, I would have quite a few reservations about something like that. Most of which revolve around the ideas that it seems like a lot of work/coding for what might end up being not that much extra game functionality, and that if anything, it would reduce social interaction. Maybe it’d be best to approach this by asking some further questions.

1: If this is something that’s going to work within the confines of an existing build, I’m guessing the space you envisage being served up as an instance is going to be quite limited (A room or two in a house, a suite in a hotel)?

2: I don’t see how you could put anything in this space (decorations, furniture, etc etc) because that could easily be misused (place lots of rare/expensive blocks in an instance and then every new visitor can collect them and walk away richer). Given that limitation, how would this be an advantage over simply building a small house nearby?

3: We don’t know the exact extent of how much fine tuning we’ll be able to do with beacons and locks, but if you could set it up so that you could allow access to a lock for a period of time (PS. I love your idea for this, I really hope it makes it into the game), and if you could limit this access to one person at a time, do you think instancing would be any better than simply having many rooms to rent, and if so, in what way?

4: I personally think that hiding people away in instances would limit the social / community aspects of the game. If too many people were to simply rent a room, you might just have an inn in place of a whole player built village. If you’re stuck in a room an invisible to people outside it, it’ll be hard to accidentally run into new people (I guess if the game is busy enough it won’t matter, but I’d certainly say that in the early stages, getting it to look as busy as possible is going to be a plus).

I’d be much more in favour of simply just having offline ‘minecraft-esque’ worlds. Whenever I’ve played with my sisters (who much prefer survival mode), I’ll quickly pop over to a creative world to make sure that my latest redstone machine idea is going to work before I start actually trying to do it in survival. I think that if it was’t too much work, it would be something well worth having.

  1. The space inside will have nothing inside, but you would be able to see out of the space and so the blocks encompassing the area would still be visible.
  2. A requirement of the instanced area is that any blocks already present cant be removed. If you want to have a great looking house and you don’t have time to or can’t build a great looking house, this is an alternative.
  3. The idea is that you can customize the interior of a home whilst having an exterior which is already made for you. If you had lots of rooms to rent you might not have that same feeling. However I would say that the smaller rooms would be in less demand so would need to be priced less, so both options can co-exist. (e.g, taverns, cottages, hobbit-holes, hotels, etc)
  4. I think if somebody wants to be anti-social they will find a way to anyway. I’m not quite sure what you mean by an inn, but I think you mean a whole community with everything they need in an instanced area. I’m not sure how you could address this problem without statistics so I will leave it. I’d say that the majority of players wouldn’t want to spend their time stuck inside an isolated area, and that it wouldn’t be possible to get very far in the game if you play like this. Instanced players can see out, but others can’t see in. Perhaps you could look at a list of players inside the instanced area and then you could request to join the instanced area to take a look around the house alongside the other player.

I agree with you, but the point of my idea is for those who aren’t as good at building than trading for example. On the large scale, you could rent out a large instanced castle for yourself (or guild?), you might not have the time or skills to build it, but you still want to be able to call it your own. This isn’t a system for people who want to build (in terms of renting out the area).

I also think that we should look at the economic benefit, a new way to make money would be created, building would be a viable option. Builders could spend their time doing what they love, while getting currency for it and people would have places to spend money! Win, win situation.

The problem is that in Black Desert you have a fixed amount of houses and that’s the reason why there need to be instances of the same room for every player.
In Boundless on the other hand you can just build a new house and rent it. I’m all for renting houses and rooms or even whole castles.
But there’s no benefit in instances.

The only thing instances do is potentially compact the space all the players use.
Why build a huge town where everyone has their own house or flat, if you could just build a small town where many people have an instance of the same house or flat?

There will be no need for towns to expand when more people want to live there.

I see only negatives for instances in Boundless.

I do agree with you now, but in a salvage attempt, would a maximum number of people (3-5) renting a building at any given time work?

Well, it also “works” without a maximum number^^
It would mitigate the effect instanced houses have on the area players need. But what would be the benefit of it?

Economic and enjoyment.

Builders who want to create buildings can earn money to use for more building (or other things). It’s not really about the money itself, it’s just about money moving.

Builders get enjoyment out of building. Dungeon clearers have fun clearing dungeon, they have lots of money and don’t want to build, so they just rent out an area instead.

But what is the benefit of renting houses in instances instead of renting it just once without an instance?
Except for you (not you specifically) to get more money with less building^^

So more than one person can enjoy the area.
So you can customize the area how you want without affecting other people.

I mean a special area can also help you make money if there is just one person who can rent it.
And it should be possible to costumize the area, without affecting other people when you leave again, without instances.

Also it might look like it but I’m not trying to convince you that it’s a bad idea^^ I just want to see if there are good points for instances.
