I would also prefer that for consistency.
I always thought it worked that way and was surprised by this when i crafted wooden tillers.
I think when you start a new character your sticks and timber are most likely from the same wood, so I never noticed it worked differently.
I mean it doesn’t really matter it is just not in line with other recipies and raises false expectations.
