World Update Frequency

I am curious when this change happen.

I remember they did some modification when many players was using regen bomb at the same time on the same world. It was really hard on the world server.

After this update blocks regen have a latency.

Would this also account for the disconnect that players experienced between players and the server? Back in 2020, I was getting unstable connection every few seconds and Boundless was the only game I experienced it on.

im curious what can couses this behaviour:

-im ebtering high tier planets running thru DL portal hub from Circa to Kol Huroo and several times - after entering portal i have unstable connection red info, several times in a row and constant rubberbanding sending me few steps backward

  • mining - mining gleam, hitting block cousing them dissapearing for a blink of an eye as they were get but in a blink they appearing again at place like nothing happening so i have to hit them few times before they are really mined, usually happen on high tier worlds, ( its not a tool fault, im using forged tools that 1 hit mining blocks)
  • from what i know and what someone checked the problem was not game or client itself but data lost during routing from client to server and im curious if that so many updates per second can cousing that errors as it trying to send a new data to server every milisecond and this way it it clogs itself and blocks the transfer? so lowering the amount of updates per second theoretically should give me clear route between updates to send changes to server not interupted by another data package?

Why not bring the test server back, and try changes in there?

Kind regards,

This makes it sound like the game was ddos itself…

I’d explain what the “updates” entail before I’d just go in and change settings to slow it down. We really should understand the “context” of the update. Like you mention “player movement”. Well, we already have a lag issue when people kill creatures and sometimes it doesn’t register till a slip second later. If updates like this slow that down even more then we can have sync issues, etc.

Minecraft your on one server, Boundless you move from server to server so only thing I would expect is maybe slightly lower load times between worlds or worlds on different servers?

We’re getting actual updates now? The exo and now this!

This change is live now. Please let me know if it made anything better or worse.

I’d have to say that the portals I usually use are more responsive now, noticeably.

Not sure if related but getting lots of lag lately and even being booted out of the game quite often. I’ve been submitting the crash dumps but think they goto GEFORCE NOW as I use this to play this game.

The portals are also loading much faster and more reliably for me. My ping also seems a lot steadier. I’m not jumping from 90ms to 300ms and back again every other second.

That’s so exciting to hear.

Portals seem to be loading slightly faster. :+1::+1:

I’ve now got about double the ping I had before the update on worlds in my region. Ping went from ~45 to ~86 :see_no_evil_monkey: On other regions the pings seems higher as well, but not doubled. :-/

I jump in and do some test in a bit.

Portals do seem to load quicker, though draw distance of open world seems slower (have upped various gameoptions.json values). Absolutely no science to back this up and based on couple of world hopping observations.
Haven’t noticed any differences otherwise, which is a good thing, I think.

The most noticeable negative effect seems to be new lag during mass mining, such as rapid 3x3 farming of stone, soil, gleam, etc. The world now has an extra “heartbeat” before the world responds to the removal of blocks and the blocks behind don’t fill in for another heartbeat. You can blast through 6 layers of 3x3 block looking at an empty world in front of you and not know how much you’ve mined so far. A bit disconcerting.
But non-world changing things, like portals, streaming, etc. are much more snappy. I think it will take some tuning to find a good balance. Curious how liquids propagate now.

As far as I know things like growing crops or crafting doesn’t “happen” when nobody is around. But as soon as someone the server “catches up” by processing these things an accelerated speed. That’s why you get XP in a chunk when you walk back to the crafting machine.

And it would make sense if “generating resources” would work the same way.

I wonder if that’s why the server has such a high tick rate - to be able to catch up.

every portal I went through (Storis, Angel, Starbug, Circ, Ceph Merica, Serp - Alcyon via Dragon hubs, and Pandora) had unplayable warnings, but loaded faster with no rubber banding. I noticed a person showing as being already in the Dragon World hub, but when I approached the portal I wanted, they seemed momentarily sucked back in. On Pandora while getting some black glass, a hopper tried multiple times to explode beside the building - I could see the smoke and red tips on it’s head, but seemed unable to. It remained angry, so I only mined a little and left. Animation glitches?
