Anyone got any tips for mining coal now? My approach from early access is failing me, thinking perhaps I’ve got the wrong altitudes. I’m happy with medium coal. No need to give up the coordinates of your favourite spot but if anybody has got it down to a fine art and wants to share methods I’m keen to learn. 
was on delta cancret earlier today and found 15 hard coal,27 medium coal and 200 soft coal in like hour and a half at most (thankfully as was all out!)
mostly found on cliff sides and in a few caves.

If you want soft coal go on a saltpeter mission on beginner planets where you can one hit the ore/coal (with the right stats and tool). Even though more drop per block from higher level planets you still mine faster and find more this method.
For medium and hard coal I find more than enough mining for gems. I know not everyone likes it but bomb mining reveals a bunch of coal on gem planets. I like Serp because while you farm your coal you will find lots of diamond and titanium in the process. With bombs I average 300 hard coal and 500+ medium coal for every 100 titanium I find.
Nothing against the natural coal planets but I personally didn’t find coal to be more common than higher tier planets and doesn’t offer the better rewards like gems but this is just my opinion.

Thanks both! Yes I too have found the misnomered Coal planets a bit disappointing. I’ve tried doing the one hit thing on a placid world but didn’t find much soft coal (and it’s not much good for spark needs). I’m trying a L5 world mining now but again not much luck. I’ll try a different one.
Do you have power for you compactor? Soft coal is decent fuel/spark when compact otherwise I agree its a sad source of energy. Besevrona didn’t seem to provide the coals needs as much as silver and fossils while Serp has a lot of hard/medium coal. Under mountains. It makes sense you will find a lot of hard coal in diamond rich areas. Good luck to you

Try coal world, I was on one recently, got about 2000 coal in couple of hours. Mostly soft coal
Edit: now I see you said you were on coal world. Not sure what results are you expecting but I was satisfied with what I got

Surfin Safari is Coal world.
There are tons of coal under the mountains. Hard Coal really is common under mountains in Surfin Safari, and you don’t need bombs to get a decent pile of medium and hard coal in 1-2 hours. Just dig deep. Though, beware If you go to depth lower than 20 you might start getting this very compressed, whitish, ugly coal that you can’t use in furnace, they call it Diamonds I believe.

Serpinserindi wasn’t to bad, wasn’t even looking for coal (rubies) and came out with a fair amount. About 800sft 150med and 50-60hrd in about 45 min

Talking far less than I’d expect, not being greedy I just mean comparable to non-coal worlds - less in fact on the coal worlds! (Both of them).
Yep I do but at this point I’m not getting much of enough to compact bulk let alone mass. Also you need the spark already to compact IIRC and I’m down to fizzes and crackles.

Iirc, it not labeled as a coal world, but boy howdy it sure seems abundant in caves and when stip mining.
Tip for those who has no power for compactors: soil. It doesn’t need power for compacting and beats everything (before power is available) when it comes to spark/fuel per gathered block (after you compact it).
Not to mention it is so easy and quick to gather.

Is there some way to find this information other than looking at the world. Says its blast elemental world.
Fantastic information. I literally never even played with soil/wood fuels until the tutorial quest told me to do so. I literally went though 1000’s of coal in my spark in beta because I assumed compact coal would be equal to the same amount of normal coal, boy was I wrong.
hmm, I also used soil before but you just gave me the idea to try copper tools on tier 1/2 worlds now where I have the Shovel/axe epic and also some speed buff next to it. Cheap stuff mass farming, here I come!!!
Devs just killed coal before release, they need to fix it tbh.
That’s not true, there is plenty of coal. A titanium mining trip to Surfin Safari easly gives me ~300 hard coal, ~1300 medium one, and i don’t even bother to mine the soft one.

also if this is the case people need to reduce the cost of hard coal… because it’s easier to obtain then low and medium which is dumb and still a problem.
Level 5, Serpenserdisi, or something like that, I really can’t remember the original name of that planet.
Ever heard the term “free market”? Why they “need”? There is nothing that can force them, nor should there be.

so late game, yea not their yet. I’m stuck on my 9 hit level 1 coals… which all points in mining… when COMPARED TO 2 HIT WOOD… they need to reduce the health of coal BY HALF…
You didn’t invest in POWER, so you have hard time hitting soft coal. I see nothing wrong with rock being way harder than a wood, it’s almost like they took inspiration from somewhere
