I know we got a really good look at the new worlds during that hunt that was filmed over the weekend, so I just wanted to take a quick poll to see what everyone thought would be an appropriate timeline for releasing them to the general public…
ARE YOU READY TO TRY OUT THE NEW WORLDS?
WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON?
I’m ready for the devs to release the new planets right now
Nice manipulation there, @anon73404375
Some could vote for new worlds to be perfected and released a bit later, but the wording “the enemy of freedom” will make that kind of choice feel negatively judged.
Anyways - the centraforge must come first and create complete crafting environment.
Then new worlds might come with new resources and materials to be brought to the complete set of machines.
The worlds we have seen during hunting seem to be just testing ground and many of them are quite limited if it comes to biomes they offer. As James mentioned some extreme topography was there for testing purposes and we can expect some more balanced and well-thought worlds at later stage.
To be honest I didn’t like thee new worlds at all. Of course, there were some amazing worlds and views but sadly I felt like thery were just some minecraft-ish modded worlds with lots of noise and unfinished, bad planned props.
I’m quite sorry to say that, as I know devs must have spent time on them, but I’m sure they may look much better than they do now - and they must.
From my perspective I would tweak them a little this way:
Make them less noisy. It’s no good to see 10 different types of soil on a small area.
Make props more refined. Please, they are soo many ways you can make pretty props. Don’t introduce probs that look that bad
LESS abstracty props and terrain. There is no place for imagination here - no “apples” on trees, no “cactuses”, no “1m high ice spikes” please. It really doesn’t look good.
some color palletes are too extreme - alienic worlds are cool but some are not alienic, awful instead
@blake Out of curiosity: Is there a system in place picking the color palettes for the planets to make sure they fit together or are they just selected at random? Cause some of the color palettes on the hunting beta really looked like eye cancer and others worked really well.
Speaking of color harmonies:
I agree that some areas had too many different blocks stuffed together, making for eye hurting experience.
However, its in the eye of the beholder and some of props you don’t like, someone else will enjoy. I for sure don’t mind if some props imitate elements known from real world (palm, cactus etc.).
Sure, they were all just tests for different terrain etc. and I have a feeling a lot of things were sometime shoved in small space just because of that. I’m sure we will see more balanced biomes in future worlds.
I think collective intelligence wins the day here, because I definitely agree with the consensus that some of the worlds were just… terrifying. One of them gave me a severe headache, and another one caused temporary blindness and then burned a hole in my monitor.
That being said, there were still at least 4-5 worlds I went to that I’d have been happy to call home, and where I was already thinking of ideas for things to build. I’m sure that, if a massive batch of planets is released, people will inevitably vote with their feet and some will be very popular while others may get left behind… But I’m ready for that day to get here.
But I guess @blake settled that when he destroyed the entire galaxy…
I can clarify what we plan to do with palettes. In the world builder we have a tool to build palettes. We can create two types of palettes: hand picked and algorithmic. Hand picked pallets we create manually. Algorithmic palettes are created by defining relationships between block colours. An example of a relationship: all leaf blocks are varying shades of red.
The last hunting universe (it has been destroyed now) used both types of palettes. ALBA-1 and OORNIK are examples worlds that used hand picked palettes. Most planets used an algorithmic palette. To be clear the algorithmic palette used on hunting was thrown together very quickly just so the worlds were not black. We have done very little work on creating algorithmic palettes. We want to use algorithmic palettes for our final release. There will not be one algorithmic palette. We plan to create many with different colour relationships e.g. burn world palette, coal world palette etc.
Aliens are… alien. I would expect some alien planets to not be pleasing to my eye. Maybe those palettes are aesthetically pleasing to eyes that see different wavelengths. And bad props could be from alien griefers or alien newbs practicing. I kinda like the ugliness mixed in with the awesome. Some of the ugly is awesome in scale. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all.
Clearly @Blake is the “enemy of freedom”… A true champion of freedom would have released the 43 planets into the wild and just created new ones!
We know the evil thoughts you harbor in the middle of the night as you think up new ways to ensure the demise of Boundless players as we innocently explore planets.
On a personal note I cannot explain how horrific it was to be grappling up near the top of a mountain with a diamond grapple, flying in the air, and then as I come down end up going through a hole in the mountain that showed that it was completely empty inside all the way down to lava! Completely hideous and malevolent whatever God created that planet!
Personally knowing how hard developing algorithms can be I think you all did a great job for the first past.
While there were times the colors seemed extreme, I kind of didn’t mind having a few planets that were just crazy on the color scheme. I think we need stuff like that. I would have liked to have seen that black colored planet.
In regards to weird water and lava and other things, I don’t mind places that had water floating in areas that didn’t make sense, etc. It would be kind of cool to have planets with less gravity and other things as well.
I did mention to James that I think you all nailed it with the gleam. You clearly showed that you are listening to feedback and doing things to ensure we don’t have limited resources, etc.
I certainly look forward to another opportunity where we can explore all the planets you create. I hope you all can help make it a bit easier to travel to the new hunting planets as you iterate the universe to test out your planet making algorithm. Thank you for letting us be so involved in this part of the process in creating the new Universe!
I honestly think we need an assortment of different types of planets. Some could be more colourful like some of the hunting worlds presented. Others could be more neutral.
In my opinion, from the adventurer’s perspective, the vibrant colours could be cool to explore and collect blocks from; whereas, I think builders tend to favour a more neutral backdrop, although I am in no way claiming to be able to speak on behalf of anyone in this other than myself.
Please see the comments by myself, @lucadeltodecso and @nevir in this thread for some descriptions of the process we’re following:
If you would like to experiment yourself with colouring a world then it’s possible with the World Builder. It’s the exact same tool and system we’re using.
You can:
Manually select all colours by eye, and then
Create a recipe / set-of-rules that generates something similar.
The first is pretty easy the second is experimental and hard.
The aim is to make all worlds uniquely coloured using a variety of rules. But each world should look great in its own way.
For a first pass I thought the worlds looked great. But I fully expect them to look considerably better at 1.0. We achieve this by experimenting, iterating and practising.
I love the idea of floating water in cretin places but i think when it generates near a cave it kind of looks bad. can you guys set it to spill into the caves?
I really like the idea of using the community to show off these worlds. I think it gives us all an insight into the progression of what you are working on. It’s too bad there are seemingly not a lot of companies out there that will actually do this kind of thing.
