I was tinkering with my paint storage a while ago.
I added a few beacons and forgot to protect them.
As it happens, another player has assembled several beacons.
Indiscriminately, everything that was nearby, even meteor platforms, was not stopped.
With the result that my prestige was down from 11 million to 600k in the settlement overview, it was still there at the beacon. The settlement name was also adopted.
Purely out of respect for other players, I would have asked if you could join, build a settlement, and choose a new settlement name together.
But from the looks of it, some like it hard.
I then created two more beacons, with over 50k prestige, and built them in between.
I had to remove two rows of plots from my ink storage and destroy the ink storage (approx. 30% of the storage is now gone) only to be disconnected again.
After I at least had the prestige visible again, part of it was ok again, only the settlement name was gone, that’s not nice.
The main shareholder, the neighbor, asked him if he could change the name.
Answer: You need to find a new name.??
Okay, very nice guy.
Then I found something nearby that wasn’t secured. (This neighbor, (new name and all), doesn’t appear to have connected the beacons.)
But who knows who it was basically doesn’t matter.
My fault for forgetting to secure the beacons.
Back to the spot… I then built a beacon with a little more prestige than the highest one in the settlement. Settlements connected, and after a few minutes the settlement no longer had my original name.
Hmm, what name should I give the settlement now? It’s not really supposed to be offensive, I don’t do that, just something funny…
How about “The Pancakes”… 
I have no idea how I came up with that at that moment, maybe I was hungry, who knows.
OK, the settlement would be renamed… it’s okay, this “nice guy” could have done it for me, but well, then you do it yourself… ; )
My temporary solution is disconnected again, the owner of the other settlement should be able to change the name again, I’m not like that.
In any case, it was worth it to me… The settlement will definitely be called that for a while, The Pancakes…
And what’s the point of all this now?
If you don’t want to become part of a settlement without being asked, simply secure your beacon.
