Beacons and what they do

Ok so … I dug out a cave made some stairs, evened out some rocks. Spent some time to connect the upper levels with the lower ones

I dropped a beacon by the door and …

Everything further away then 6 steps reverted. 6 steps?! That cant really be working as intended. I spent hours making and building my cave and it all reverted +/ - 6 steps.

So whats is the actual range of a beacon? and please don’t tell me 6 steps

You are almost right, one beacon plot is 8x8x8.
But you can extend your initial beacon by 14 other beacon plots (each “plot” also holds 8x8x8 steps) using a beacon plotter [4 stone + 1 glass].

The range of a beacon is an 8x8x8 area locked to a grid from where you place the beacon.

But the as long as there is a beacon you can extend its reach with extra 8x8x8 plots using the beacon plotter.

(Damn ninja’d to the second by @vastar  )

In addition to what the others said.
This beacon system is not final. They’ll hopefully make it more flexible.
And in the final game you can get more beacon plots by progression.

Will somebody please explain to me how to create a beacon in-game? I keep making stuff just to have it revert non-stop.

PS, can anybody answer how the reversion will work @ 1.0? My thoughts were that you could change the world however you wanted to, but that beacons would interfere with others messing with your stuff. To me, this is the only sensible system for a game like this. If the only building allowed is inside of beacon plots it really diminishes people’s abilities to really alter their world. IE, I don’t like the mountain in front of my beacon-protected castle’s view, so I’m going to tear it down 1 block at a time.

The problem with not having regeneration though: Have you ever been on an old minecraft server? You can walk for half an hour without seeing anything but destruction.

you can create beacon(s) and beacon plotters with 4 stone and 1 glass. the regeneration will happen if no one is in that area (don’t know the area size, maybe its view distance) for about 24 hours (in really populated areas buildings will stay even if they are not beacon’ed) but the regeneration time is not yet final.

Create a beacon and beacon plotter, then place the beacon block somewhere. Then all you have to to do is get out the beacon plotter and (I believe?) you right click where you want to extend your beacon.

I made a beacon in the testing build in my latest video. Here’s the link to the timecode where I’m making the beacon: https://youtu.be/BSuDjCjvRNQ?t=9m16s

So, I don’t know what’s different about what I’m doing. I can’t make beacons, my GUI looks entirely different from yours in the crafting and inventory tabs. Are you on the PTR?

I like Miige’s post below. The fact that if somebody passes through the area every 24 hrs/or so and it doesn’t revert makes it work imo. Although, I’d feel better with about 72 hrs, just in case I’m gone for a while or something.

I’m on the testing beta in that video!
Here’s a video from the legacy servers a while ago but with the same gui:

How can I remove beacons?

I’ve plotted a few beacons around but i have now lost track of their locations and I am unable to find them. How can i disable/remove these beacons?

You’re going to have to either track down and destroy the beacon, or wait till the next world reset to have your beacon refunded.
