Best torch for mining

Just like the title says.

What’s the best torch for mining, keep in mind I still use vanilla titanium hammers (building up to forging soon).

I branch mine, so have lots of long single block tunnels, standard torches don’t light all the way, diamond is to glaring close up. I use an amethyst at the moment, it’s ok but the colour distorts things a bit.

Any thoughts?

I’ve used gleam (unrefined)…easy to get a ton from Kada 1 and just throw them about

Tbh i use the light epic for this reason, it seems like an okay compromise on brightness level and my miner can carry a shovel in his off hand for those random gravel blocks down there.

Recently put a max light level buff on a tool and thats arguably a bit better - more range than the epic with less sunburn than a diamond torch, but i prefer having 2 hands free. Also useful when larry the lava decides to join me in a narrow tunnel so i dont go blind cycling to my emergency barrier blocks

Edit - never considered gleam. Doh.

Yeah, seems sensible.

I tend to hold my torch while mining, I hate leaving things behind!

Light epic is my ultimate goal. Was waiting until lvl 50, not to long to go though.

If your still early game then try and get a diamond torch from a shop, casts the most light for looking round caves etc. should be able to get one for around 500 - 1000.

Thanks for suggestion, but I have tried a diamond torch, I find the glare from close up irritating.

It does shine quite far but the glare impedes seeing any detail down the tunnels.

I’d go with an Emerald Torch due to it’s green hue giving an effect of night vision and allows you to clearly see farther.

BUT!!

I wouldn’t recommend gem torches AT ALL, they’re TOO bright… enough that using the diamond one is outright blinding

  1. Cool Blue Gleam Lantern - u can get those for around 100-150c . just one per character and you’re set for a while
  2. Offhand tool with Glow Boon - those are more expensive but they can really turn to a one-time investment.
A tool can have the glow range of up to 12m, if you invest a bit more and try for an Auto-Harvest + Harvest range you’re pretty much set for life. As these tools are meant to only be held and not used - so they never lose their durability.
Prices can go up to 5k for a tool such as this
  3. Light skill, 10m range, I don’t personally like this option and I only ever gave it to my builder (as he 100% of the time dual wields a chisel) those 5 skill points can be precious if you’re low-level.

Awesome, thanks for all that detail!

Will try out and see what works best for me.

Nice one.

Any tips on where to purchase such a tool?

Ephy might still be selling those.
If not, Aridhol (forgemasters) takes custom orders or might keep a couple in stock.

Thanks guys and girls, will make a trip to see what I can find.

I just use a block of refined gleam. Works perfect and cheap as hell.

Make yourself a regular lantern. The light is bright, doesn’t have glare, and is rather neutral.

Edit; if you’re online now I can give you one to save you crafting it.

Thanks bud, I have plenty of lanterns lying about though.

Have tried then, but find them a bit big and block more of my vision than I like!

Great suggestions everyone, and I think this might help out loud of others as well.

Just a note, I’m lvl 48 at the moment, but sure if some consider this early/mid. My skills investment may differ than most as I have put nothing in forging.

Hey, i usually have multiple light sources in my left hand. I keep gleam for marking locations, a glow grapple for getting up and down, and a diamond torch for just bullrushing rocks

I much prefer using the 5 skillpoints for other skills instead of the light epic when i can get better light from forged tools that im already using constantly anyways

Im also level 48

Alternatively you could roleplay as Daredevil, using nothing but the cave sounds to find your way around.

Whack! Whack! ‘Ah yes, the sound of coal’.
