Seeing as this thread has been resurrected, I figured I would add my 2 pence worth
As @Okkelinor has also discovered, it’s not possible to chisel in a block when there is another block vertically positioned against it. You basically have to chisel the bottom edge on that top block first, and then chisel in the rest of the blocks (moving downwards in this case), working from the outside inwards.
However, doing the above will not allow you to create the following concave pillar…
You can only get so far… chiseling slopes for edges 1, 3, 5 and 7 is fine… the problem arises when you want to chisel 2, 4, 6 and 8, which require other chiseled blocks above or below them.
I’ve had a couple of occurrences where I have had to rebuild parts of my constructions due to this limitation
The problem you are describing is caused by the implementation of dual wielding.
Pre-dual wielding the chisel had 2 different ‘modes’ dependent on whether you used it with the LMB or RMB.
Now the second mode (which allowed constructions like the one you are showing) is occupied by your other hand.
Dunno if the devs are aware of this or if they plan to ‘fix’ this / somehow re-implement the 2nd functionality of the chisel.
I don’t think dual wielding is what changed it … you never have been able to modify vertically stacked blocks when they have block above (or below) the block edge you want to chisel. The RMB only affected 2 blocks placed horizontally next to each other, and made it so that it chiseled both at the same time, instead of having to click twice (unless, of course, there was an earlier implementation of the chisel that I didn’t get to see!).
This post explains why vertical chiseling has been prevented the way it has … Bug: chisel does not chisel correctly? (plus small torch bug) … but I think that, now the RMB mode no longer exists, and the chisel can only affect one block at a time, it’s most likely that the edge-cases the vertical restriction catered for, are not as much of an issue any more (at least in my opinion).
Well, I remember building the exact same structure you describe as ‘impossible to build’. So there was definitely more utility to the chisel before dual wielding got implemented.
This post is only about the edge case of what happens if you chisel a horizontal surface next to a vertical one.
In fact, it was possible to chisel vertical if you aimed at the horizontal edge between two blocks (on an 1x1 nerd pole, for example) if one of the blocks already had a slope. Which allowed structures & combinations that are now impossible to build (like the one you described above)
The 2 original chiseling modes (only the selected block and all touching blocks) will return. This was disabled when we added dual wielding as each item of equipment only has a single action. It will be enabled by different material chisels having different properties (for example, chiseling speed). One of the properties will be the mode.
The issue of only chiseling outer exposed surfaces will also be fixed to allow chiseling on any visible block.
The chisel will also be made similar to the other tools so that it will take some time to shape different materials.
These changes are not a high priority in comparison to the other dev items, but will happen before 1.0.
