I have main spark set for my main machines groups, extending out single file, so xp can trigger slowly.
have a secondary spark set with various machines…not so xp triggering efficient and but going in slowly works.
set of furnaces in 2 lines (gold and silver etc)
certainly not best layout but works for my purposes.
Building wide and lengthy also handles the max complex block issue.
also have room to expand if needed…one lesson I have learnt is always always leave room to expand (or just go build a bigger workshop elsewhere 
)
