Building vs Combat

Although technically this is just like having two hotbars that you can switch between. You should honestly be arguin for this :stuck_out_tongue:
The way I see it is that you have a HUD that shows you more combat related info and stats and a hotbar holding all your weapons and whatever else you want to fight with, while you have another HUD that shows more building related stats and other useful things like coordinates (It would still show health and armor and all that too) and a hotbar to go with that that has building blocks and tools.
Instantly switching between the two is pure convenience!

There’s a minecraft mod that gives you extra slots for weapons and a key to sheath/unsheath quickly. After playing with it for a while I can confirm it was a lot handier and more enjoyable than vanilla. +1 to Zouls mode switch idea, it’s simple and could be effective in improving the game experience.

it makes alot more sense to me atleast and as square mentioned it would make it possible to have combat relevant data while in combat mode and not have it in the building mode.

I support the switch idea although with a modification. I don’t want any hotbar skills. If you switch into combat you’d have a smaller hotbar which only shows your equipped weapon. Maybe you could have two weapons (or 4 depending on how they handle dual wielding) in your hotbar to quickly switch from range to melee.

But no skillbar and 1-0 key mashing. I highly disliked that in every MMO (except one) I played until now.

so every fight would just be spamming the same standard attack again and again and again? that sounds really boring XD

No it would require skill with dodging and alternating your hit combos which you maybe can with left, right mousebutton or just by pressing a key while hitting.

I’m not sure how the system should work but no skillbar and skillbased (not the same skills) are the requirements I have.

So you want absolutely no special skills for hotbars? and generally only have a combo fighting system? can you give an example of a game where that worked other than monsterhunter?

You meanie^^ I just wanted to say MH^^ but I don’t really know one. Maybe because noone tried it and always played the safe WoW route of skills :stuck_out_tongue:

No hotbar skills doesn’t mean you couldn’t have one or two you could activate otherwise. Or if you really want a hotbar I could live with a hotbar that goes from 1-4 or less^^

not sure if you read my skill idea post i wrote, but i really dont like wow where you have EVERY FREAKING ABILITY. all the time,

i would like skills, but i would like multiple skills to choose from and then only be able to keep 5 - 7 active skills equipped at any time, that way it requires more skill, dodging, and you can just keep throwing stuff after people hoping something will stick.

I read it but I want as little skillbar skills as possible. Preferably 0-2

that would be horrible.

combo systems are nice, but they generally tend to only work in third person massive hack and slash games. and they are not really strategic, they are build up on reflex and knowing when to dogde and when to attack but that is it. there are games that utilize it but every one of the games also use a skill system because there is not much diversity in combo systems.

the diversity comes with the player.

But let me rephrase it. As long as I can use the skills without bending my finger across my keyboard or buying a 100 key gaming mouse you can have all the skills you want^^

Playing Evie in Vindictus gives a pretty alright skill use system based on RMB and direction keys. You hold RMB for longer to charge and select more powerful abilities. Evie was a magic class but this could possibly work for other classes too.

Vindictus also had a tiny hotbar for consumables.

Ohh i almost forgot that, vindictus is also a really good example for combo combat, my bad.

it might be something that can be considered for oort if it was third person (though i would find it really bland since it is pure spam and no strategy) but what if it was first person? do you think a combo system would work then too? combo systems only works in games with a softlock target system, what if it doesnt have that either?

I assume you exclude MH right? Because it didn’t have any sort of target system.

And just because you only spam in such games doesn’t mean others can’t go strategical at it.

About the F/TPS. I never played a game which even tried to implement FPS combo combat. Do you?

Never seen a proper FPS combo. but that is why i cant imagine it.

and sorry, i tried to look at Monster hunter and it seemed like some sort of soft lock, not in a way that you keep turning towards it, but when you hit you make slight movements towards the enemies.

admittedly i cant talk too much about the system since i never got to play monsterhunter

I would prefer a skill system that isn’t based off of pressing a number, but a combination of how you move the mouse and clicking with left and right buttons.
Say you sprint towards someone and then left click, it does a thrust attack, but if you jump then attack while falling, it does a downwards slash. Something like that.

Nope, you have no target system at all. If you stay one degree wrong you’ll miss your hit.

exactly what I want.

That would also be amazingly cool for melee

lest try to think about Magic, ranged attacks and the like.

also lets say you can make 20 combinations with 1 weapon, then every person you meet who uses that weapon will do the EXACT same as you.

that is the difference, i want the ability to see people be creative in builds, abilitites and fighting rather than doing like ‘‘here, you have this weapon, you can ONLY use it this way’’

i have played alot of MMORPG’S through time also those who use a combo system, but every last one of them also had skills. cause there is just something that spamming left and right click cant do.

it might be possible, but its a system best pulled off in games like MH.
