Would the devs ever consider selling game licenses for in game currency, maybe 500k-1m for a license? It would be a great coin sink (to combat inflation), a great reward for higher tier players, and a great way to get players into the game. Just an idea.
Main issue I see here is less funds going to a small team of developers in a currently relatively small game. This method has worked in Eve Online (though game keys are still bought with money from someone), but consider that that’s a much larger game.
It would also make the game highly favour people who make money either through trading or other means, which makes certain groups (like builders who are often broke) unable to even fathom such things, so there could be a major imbalance at that point.
(EDIT: Keep in mind these are random thoughts from me and by no means is meant to be logical in any way lol)
That’s not how it works in any other game.
You are never buying game keys or game time for ingame currency directly from the developer. That’s just economic nonsense.
But what works is a player buys a game license for real money and there is a official and secure place to trade it to other players for ingame currency.
Lots of games have multiple currencies. I don’t have a problem with it. In Runescape I can earn 4.5mil and buy a subscription bond in game, sell it to other players, give it to a friend, etc. Or I can use irl $$$ to buy one.
Plat in Warframe = $$$$$
In Tr people buy coin pouches for irl $$$ - they serve no purpose but to be sold to other players for in-game currency.
Yes an official trading place could be cool
Maybe not for RMT but for licenses and gleam club only?
I don’t see it as the devs losing money really, since those people were probably not going to buy the game otherwise. Especially if they let people pay real money for licenses then trade them for coins - that method would see them get more sales!
This would work great for gleam club. Make a physical in game token that can be redeemed for a month’s worth of GC. You could buy them for a similar cost of gleam club in IRL currency then sell it for in game coins or give it to a friend.
Also, yeesh have the prices gone up. I remember trust trading 750k OSRS for RS3 GP to go buy a bond prior to them having old-school bonds and the grand exchange.
I think the lowest I remember them being was about 2mil
They went from 40k avg peeps to 100k when they added new regions and mobile. That may have driven the prices up
I’d be cool with a second currency for this type of thing. Before that was done, though, I’d hope more effort would be put into the first currency we have and make it more accessible to everyone in other ways than what we have now with FF/shop.
I remember WoW letting players buy a game-time token for real $ and then selling the token on the AH for gold at market price. Could work for gleam club as someone said above
I think the tokens are a good idea, I would buy them.
Buying GC or licenses directly from a dev/cash shop for in game currency is a bad idea. It has to originate from a cash purchase or you’re simply pulling the feet out from under the game.
This leads to more load and less income. Directly.
The logic that an influx of players who are “only playing the game because it was free” might lead to more gleam club purchases over time is, at best, a poor gamble. It would take 8 months of gleam club purchased to cover revenue loss for each of these licenses used and the little bit of retention data we as players have access to implies that this is not likely to happen.
I meant it differently about people who might not otherwise buy the game - but I agree with you, it would be best if people paid wonderstruck real money for license keys and gleam club, and then wonderstruck set up a market for people to trade those items to people for coin. I’m personally more interested in buying license keys to get friends to play the game, but either way it sounds like a win-win for WS and gamers. Allowing trade in license keys would probably be better for WS.
I think his would encourage further distribution of the coin currently in the economy and bring new faces to the game. It would provide a more reliable avenue for people that want to secure their time investment during extended absences and encourage retention of existing players as well.
It’s basically a system for buying in game currency with real world dollars and I’ve seen plenty of posts/comments indicating there’s a demographic already playing that would be happy to have this system so they they can achieve their in game goals on a limited timeline.
Yeah a lot of people don’t like anything they think looks like P2W but I’m not against it and specially in a game where the business model is already “pay to play”.
As long as it’s not removing existing cashflows like buying direct with in-game coin would do I’m 100% for something like this.
Maybe hit up one of the Ortian grade forumers here. They may have some keys left from their stash. See if they are willing to sell you one with in game currency.
If I understand you correctly, This turns the game into P2W as far as i am concerned, I have already experienced the effect of this in EVE online and to a lesser degree in WoW.
I am only slightly against this, I think it might be a bad idea, but if they put it in I would be happy to (ab)use it.
