Can we buy Boundless? As a group?

Would it be possible to buy Boundless as a group or something?
I see few dedicated people here on the forums, I suppose few would actually contribute to own a share of the game? Maybe even make it open source - but with paid servers?
With a lot of dedicated people and AI, we could push this game further.

  • Would you contribute to buying the game from Monumental?
  • Yes - 100 USD/EUR
  • Yes - 1000 USD/EUR
  • Yes - money is not a problem
  • No

ps. I messed up the poll and I’m not allowed to edit it. The question is part of the choices lol. If an admin could kindly put the question outside the questionnaire, that would be appreciated.

Kind regards,

So, would you? If yes, would it be in hundreds, low thousands or more?

The question is, how much would Monumental ask for it..
Hope it is okay to ask.

How much does it cost to buy the game?
How much does AWS cost monthly?

Kind regards,

I think making a new game would be a better option personally. That way you aren’t dealing with old code.

I have asked Monty directly multiple times if he would be willing to sell the game, how much that would cost, if he would open source the game and a whole slew of other ideas.

I also feel it would be hard for many people to trust someone to just buy it and be able to afford to keep it running as server costs are pretty hefty. iIRC server costs alone were upwards of 10k a month.

Not saying it can’t be done, just saying making a new game overall seems more feasible.

how much would it cost to make a new game?

The reason I ask is because I think buying from Monumental would be more than people think. They have all the two platform coding, the art, has already been approved on stores, etc. That is going to be worth a pretty penny even with no players.

Plus is there any info on how they bought it? cash? trade? cash+revenue sharing, only revenue sharing? who knows?

I think they only way possible would be to try to raise a good chunk of money for a cash payment with future revenue sharing or something like that. And something like that might even violate their original purchase agreement. IDK? Coming up with enough money for a cash purchase would be tougher than we can imagine in my opinion.

A loan? forget about it from a bank. I work in finance and although I admitted above that code, art, and tech have value banks don’t see it that way. They see a dead game as high risk and will not touch it unless the borrower has something else of value to leverage

What about James? I am sure he hates seeing his baby in the condition it is in. I think they did pretty well on BG. But the reality, he was probably glad to get rid of this headache.

I agree on starting fresh. But why reinvent the wheel?

There are other games that have great modding support and tools. Why not recreate boundless in one of those updated newer games?

Well its not the cost to make it so much as the cost to run it. I had started a project on my own making a voxel game and after I thought about it and the cost to simply run the servers would be pretty hefty. $10,000 a month give or take and thats just with the current size of the persistent universe Boundless has. You could do self hosted servers a lot cheaper, which sort of makes me think that was why James was pushing for private universes.

If you were to leverage AI you could build the foundation of the game for nearly nothing, I’m not a fan of AI art, but you could use it for placeholder art.

If anyone wanted to develop something though, I’d suggest first building a plan, a design doc, then focus on getting an MVP (minimum viable product) then producing a prototype.

Then and only then should someone even consider trying to talk about the project or pursuing interest or funding.

Also, if Boundless was to have some price tag on it I’d imagine its easily over $250k+

  1. Intellectual property and brand: $25,000–$100,000
  2. Source code and game technology: $50,000–$200,000
  3. Art, assets and game content: $25,000–$100,000
  4. Live-service infrastructure and tools: $15,000–$60,000
  5. Existing community and goodwill: $10,000–$40,000
  6. Commercial rights and platform access: $10,000–$50,000

Estimated combined range: $135,000–$550,000

Dang. I was thinking probably about $150k

Well lets forget the purchasing option. Unless there are some trust fund babies that want to part with their money

I see 135k mostly

i would need some time to save up for it but even while i’m playing video games less and less in general the game was too good to not want to see it taken up by those who really get it and would put the time in to figure out wtf snarl the devs ran away from

if there are any of those multiplayer that run on mac let me know, i haven’t found anything but Rust since Boundless

$10,000 a month seems insane to me.

But making a new game and then relying on self-hosted servers would just make the new game … not an MMO. But one of the major draws for people here seems to be that it IS a voxel MMO in a persistent universe. Self-hosted servers just do not have the same feeling.

Regardless, it feels like Boundless was doomed from the start if they were paying that much monthly in server costs. And if there’s no way around that, it sounds like this kind of game niche doesn’t fit as an MMO. Kind of baffling overall.

that is a huuuuge draw for me, i did end finding a pve Rust server with a lot of people who’ve played it for several years, and it sort of ends up working like that a little bit

AWS isn’t cheap this is just AI spitting numbers out here and this was from when I was doing some research in the past:

Cost category Illustrative monthly cost
Persistent world game servers $4,000–$7,000
Databases and persistent world storage $500–$1,500
Network traffic and data transfer $500–$2,000
Monitoring, backups and backend services $200–$800
Total possible range $5,200–$11,300

This is also pretty variable and why they were trying to get the costs down. I was told the servers were costing roughly about this or slightly more.

Yea…getting companies to invest into very specific hardware where its serving a low customer base is hard…Much like my work. I need a license that costs 30k a year to do my job. Because i am the only one who needs it out of 30k plus employeees. Nope!

I think hytale is on mac os but how far back they go…dont know. Dont have a mac and will never need it.
Hytale says it came play on

Apple Silicon with macOS Tahoe (26.0)

But onto the topic…i dont have the funds to invest anymore into games. Darn supply chain disruptions and tarrifs.
