Before the patch I recall being able to shift click items into a matching smart stack. Now they go to the first smart stack.
For example:
You have a storage block with 4 different types of ore. A smart stack each for copper, iron, silver, gold. Each smart stack contains only one type of ore. If I had a smart stack in my inventory of comingled ore I could open the smart stack and shift click the copper and it would go into the copper stack. Shift click the iron and it would go into the iron stack. Etc. Now since the patch everything goes to the first smart stack that has room.
Am I misremembering how it worked or did something change?
I do agree that this is a much better way of shift clicking into stacks. But I don’t think (I might be wrong) that they ever did do that. I’ll have a quick look to see how easy it is to make it match your idea.
Ok, so, that is easy to do. However, you can’t assume that a shift click wont mix your stacks. If you shift click and there is no space left in a matching stack it will still go into a mixed stack.
Also I’m guessing we want the same with colors. Which is totally doable but its now starting to get really complicated. Which is more important item types or color types?
as a frequent builder in the game I can’t say which takes priority.
I seem to find myself sorting by both every time I go on a building session.
Have you ever looked into something the likes of how Factorio “locks” certain inventory slots for a specific item? might be a good way to handle the UI side of things.
Type should take precedence over color because it is the higher level of item. Colors are a lesser variance to each of the main thing if you look at it in a hierarchical way.
Yeah I’ve gone for type first and then color as the next most important.
I think a real nice step would be if we highlight the slot it will go into blue (like for the inventory hands) when you hold shift and then stays highlighted for half a second after you do the move.
Ok, this thread confused me.
So i had to check right away and for me the shift click sorting still works.
I built a stack of mixed ores and shift-clicked it into my storage with separate stacks for copper, iron, etc. and it split up that stack and distributed it along the different stacks in my storage.
I does’t work if you only have full 100’s in the target stack which is odd.
What’s also annoying when you combine say two stacks of 50 and 60 it only creates a stack of 100 and leaves 10 at the original location instead of creating a smart stack with 100 and 10 in it.
It didn’t change the behavior, it was working like that before. If you want to have your ores classified by type, just put at least one item on each slot inside the smart stack on your storage. So when you come back from mining you can just shift click your ores and they will go to the expected stack.
I do it for ores, flint and techs, but you can do it for everything, also colors.
It’d be better to have a feature inside the game, but this is a work around.
Thanks so much! It looks like it stopped working because I broke 100 shards and once it converts to a smart stack it stops sorting and even if there’s a stack of only burn shards it will dump shift clicked burn shards in the first shards stack it finds. @juanjoe33 has a good work around for now.
I can make arguments both ways for blocks and don’t build enough to have a preference. For resources it should match the exact type then fall through to any stack of the same generic type. For example if I have a stack of fiberous leaves and a stack of inky leaves then shift clicking should put it in the fiberous stack if there’s room. Regardless of where in the storage block the stack is. If that smart stack is full then any leaf stack is fine.
This is the kind of player-developer interaction that leads to great QOL improvements. Thank you @dave for being proactive and willing to work with the player base.
