I know the main focus of the game is on building, but I wonder what role character customisation with equipable items (like wings, pets etc) is going to play in the future. I feel like the mmo part of the game would become much greater if there was a large collection of items to customize you character (with some of them being super rare or hard to get).

I totally agree ! Not to mention that cosmetics can generate money and most gamers agree that this is a legitimate way to monetize a game.

Iām not just talking about store items, I mean items that can be for example crafted or gotten in other ways like quests. Also store packs with random items would be an option too.
