Cooperation between portal networks

The TNT Gyosha Hub has one too but no one uses it. @Ratchel

Someone actually opened a sovereign planet on it.

… all I have to say is that

@Kokuma

Firstly Thank you for your valued input, it is always useful to hear about what people like/dislike about the TNT network.
I too have shared similar frustrations, and so I believe sharing some history might provide context on why the megahub is the way it is and also why the network is the way it is.

When the megahub was built there was not a ground floor there were no planet hosts, nor planet portals. What is now the upper 2 tiers was all there was and it was simply a portal hub which happened to be able to connect to every T1 to T4 in the universe.

The planet portals were actually the last thing we added, hence why the top two levels are somewhat disorganised. In theory it would be great to have some organisation, in practice its not effective due to the high turnover of portals, constant resizing. We have been always discussing ways to improve those levels and maybe one day we will manage to organise in some way.

The mall section on the ground floor was actually my first attempt to bring some order to the hub, and it was well received, the Sov wall the final addition was also another attempt to organise.

We have always maintained direct links to other networks, both PS and Ultima in the middle of our ground floor, and we have a dedicated section for other hubs on the ground floor.

We have never felt any sense of competition as our hub was built differently to others, it was simply a different not necessarily better or worse solution to what existed already. Our aim was less jumps.

To touch on the larger issue at hand, finding shops I believe we all encounter this issue. As @DKPuncherello quite rightly pointed out in many cases the planet will likely give an indication of where the shop might be, and it seems more people are naming their beacons with some directions or location information.

TNT did set about on a project to solve this issue which were our Minihubs, the idea is very much as you described we allowed for a fixed number of portals between varying distances from the hub. We encountered a few issues on this project.

  1. It is a lot more to manage
  2. Some hubs never saw one portal open
  3. We had actual competition in the form of the Compass hubs, we did attempt to reach out inorder to work together but it did not work, and we recognised that @Alwin had built a very robust system and had the time to actively seek out and speak to people to get them connected, and so in the spirit of community we decided to no longer continue rolling out our hubs as with a small player base there was no need to compete. If ever he asks for our support to increase his visibility we will gladly assist despite our differences.

We did once upon time discuss deeper collaborations with the other major networks, and it never really materialised, so the effort was made and in the end the result was we gave prime placement portals in the ground floor, and in return we were given prime placed portals on the other side.

Our network simply wouldnt have come to fruition without our gracious planet hosts they helped us achieve the dream by funding a portal each, in some cases multiple planets. That being said it was always asked that there would be personal portals nearby, and so thank you for pointing out that some do not have any. We will address this directly with our hosts.
As @PrincessMaude quite rightly pointed out as one of our hosts, we never wanted to dictate to people on how and where to put things in 90% of the cases the cities already existed. For newer ones we always do ask for personal portal within reach of the monolith.

Finally one key thing to remember is that many of the out of the way shops on the lower tier planets simply dont have the oort, or the desire to connect into a network.

In closing I hope I addressed your comments, and I hope one day we finally find a way to make finding a shop a little easier even if it has to be via an external resource like boundless trade use to provide.

As always a huge thank you to all of our planet hosts, Stay Boundless.

Out of curiosity, do you happen to remember the name/part of the name of the shop you were looking for on Kada I, @Kokuma?

I agree that more switch-points between networks would really be great. I mean more worlds where portal hubs connect between each other or are located close.

I am glad that PS has moved to Ashenvale on Lutrion and is now located close to Ultima hub there. That means PS and Ultima users travelling AU worlds can switch between the two networks on Lutrion very easily.

One small step towards a better world :sunglasses:

Speaking from the PS side of things, in the past its always been hard for me to get things done - PS was always run as a democracy, and all the elders had different views on how things should be run, making big changes or things such as collaboration difficult.

Since then, many of the elders have stopped playing, and ive basically just taken control, with my focus over the last fortnight being to rebuild the network to stop it decaying into obscurity.

With that said, I never really understood how such a collaboration could work - I was under the assumption TNT already has a hub for every planet (or at the very least, a portal to every planet) as PS does.

While i’m not against building near other hubs (so long as its not literally right next to it), I feel that for the most part TNT and most of the PS hubs are already established, and to ask TNT to move to us would be unfair to them. (Maybe i’m wrong on this? idk)

Similarly, paying for portal collections from each of the hubs (were talking 52 1x2 portals) I think would be a massive burden on both sides, especially given how TNT’s Main Circarpous hub already Links to PS Grovidias Te

With that said, when I remodel PS Grovidias Te I plan to dedicate a whole side on the main platform to portal networks (Currently TNT and Ultima, as well as a few PS locations such as the Hunters Courtyard & guildhall). Perhaps other major networks could also be added to this as a step to making it easier to navigate.

@Envyv77 @Vansten Thanks for the feedback/backstory on how things came to be, and thanks again for creating and maintaining great places for everyone’s convenience.

Sadly no, can’t remember which shop it was. All I remember was finding something on BUTT and trying to get there but couldn’t.

Ah right, I always forget that there’s portals to PS and Ultima in the bottom center. They just don’t come into sight cause they’re below the stairs, away from the ring of other portals xD

maybe someone could try to make a network hub?
where all networks have one portal preferable to their main hub

We do have a network section that links pretty well to others but yes it wouldn’t hurt. I think grandeur guild has this semi covered with their embassy they are doing.

There are tons of them. For my home I use Alutech which connects me to whatever network I need. (And there’s even a shop if I need something)

Our EFC farms are connected to multiple networks on Bes, which makes them a network hub.

Typically i go though TNT to get where i need to go, more often then not i get to some shop 2k away from the on planet hub and surprise they have a portal back to tnt mega hub with some name that doesnt match the sign some times.

This. This is the exact problem i have with the portals on the 2nd/3rd floor xD

This seems like a shop owner issue. When I eventually open my shop, I’ll name the store beacon something like “Serenity Designs via TNT Raxxa NNW - Serenity Lodge”

I use these portals whenever I want to warp somewhere to only pay 100c or if I need some stone from this planet. These planet portals are really convenient to me.

If only TNT would connect Besevrona directly to the hub instead of through Serp… hint hint hint

But most useful planets are in the shopping hub on the ring. I doubt you’ll find a single useful portal at the Niia, Arie, or Refgar PS hub. Portals are expensive and there’s not much gain from connecting your place to small outpost of a portal network. If you can afford a portal, you’ll also be able to afford one to Lamblis or maybe even Circapous.

Again, these places are very useful to warp somewhere or collect materials from this planet.

Besides that, portal networks lost a lot of their utility when we got the free port home. Now they are only used to get somewhere, but not to get back. Which is probably why most portals are moved to a few central locations and most hubs are moved to the big city on the planet.

Theres a BIG difference between 2x2 (assuming they use those In Lamblis) and 1x2 portal cost i would take 1x2 anyday!

I agree, an that’s what I did, but most people don’t open these small 1x2 portals to the hubs but a bigger one to a more central location.

But thats just opposite that you said on your post.

I just dont get how this makes any sense.

First they are expensive but they are not that expensive so you can might aswell open 3x more costing portal. :boundless:

Then you did exactly opposite that you cheered For.
You are sailing between left and right.

I don’t have a better explanation and why it’s the way it is but these outposts of the portal networks rarely have open portals. For PS most portals are at the shopping hubs on the ring, for TNT it’s in Circapous, for Ultima it was in Finata.

My assumption is that there are 3 kind of people. People who can’t or don’t want to open a single portal, people who open a single but cheep portal, and people who can afford bigger portal and don’t care about the increased cost. Just from looking at the existing networks, the middle group seems to be very small these days.

im in the middle bracket… im keeping all my portals 1x2 so i can save on oortshard cost
:stuck_out_tongue: Anytime its to an area i already have a ‘nearby’ portal to i don’t bother opening it as i’d rather walk or grapple/run the distance from my other portal. im cheep, and im proud of it :stuck_out_tongue:
