Again, in the context of figuring out what could make the experience of the early game better for a player, I thought “I had 0 issue while doing the tutorial”, and that was in September 2018. But I also had already experienced friends around who shared some valuable informations with me.
The tutorial has been improved, but I would think something that would be like a final piece of polish in that concept would be to hire some sweet ear-candy voice (like the voice from the trailer who told me to "be bold, be remarkable, be boundless") that puts the player at ease and calmly spells out the tutorial objectives until you are free to do your own objectives.
As a way to reinforce the feeling of accomplishment, the voice could dish out some lines like “excellent” or “well done!” upon achieving objectives.
This could be the voice of the Elder in the Sanctum who currently only says something like a primitive witch-doctor line “Ooga booga!”, not really fitting of someone who seems important and smart.
Could also be the opportunity to give him a number of welcome lines like “Welcome back, friend”, “Ah, I was wondering when I’d see you next!” that he would have a very rare chance of saying when you log into the game or when you teleport yourself to the Sanctum.
NOW SURE, Boundless is defined by the “Hatubio” and other salutation sounds that nobody really know how to write, but should that really prevent the game from having understandable voice-lines, if that could improve the early-game experience and give an ever-so-slightly more gratifying experience?
In Boundless, as players, how many of words do we know? I can’t even tell you if it’s ancient Oort language, Oortling language or something else.
Here’s an example. In World of Warcraft, Humans speak in common, which is the real-life language of your choice, but the actual WoW Human language sounds more like “An karanir thanagor” (“Long live the King”). You hear orcs speaking in english all the time, but they also have their own orcish language with stuff like “Zog zog” or “Dabu” and “Mak’gora” which bleeds out in there quite often.
So, what do you think?
- Yay, I want some sweet ear-candy voice from time to time!
- Nay, I don’t want the Elder to have more voice-lines! Ooga Booga!
- Meh, I don’t care…
