Foliage Quality Issue Since 225

Hey Guys,

I’ve more or less taken a break from the game due to suspected burn out close to 3000hrs of gameplay, but I logged in today to check out all the new cool stuff and to fuel portals etc. It’s all looking great besides a few issues that have already been reported and acknowledged. Mostly the lighting stuff really but I’m not here to talk about that.

My issue is with the Foliage Quality setting on PC. It now has levels 1 - 8 but They don’t seem to do anything for ground foliage like it used to. The only noticeable effect I’ve seen is with the Tree Foliage and even there, all settings between 1 and 8 don’t seem to do very much. The Ground Foliage however, the settings don’t seem to effect it at all. I used to be able to turn it down to the lowest level so that I could easily see Rosetta Nox and Desert Swords but now, they’re almost impossible to see through the grass until you’re literally right on top of them and even then they’re pretty hard to see.

Here are a few pics. The first two pics are of Foliage setting 1…

And here are two pics of Foliage Setting 8…

As you can see, the ground foliage setting for both setting 1 and 8 are literally identical. I’m really hoping that this isn’t ‘working as intended’ and that you great Devs are already aware and on the case.

Besides that and the already reported issues, the update is looking fantastic. I don’t know if the farming aspect is for me but farming has never really been my thing in any game really. I’ve mostly been looking forward to the placeable liquids, water transparency enhancements and the lighting improvements. So far so good on those and I look forward to seeing how it all looks once you guys iron out and balance the few reported issues.

Anyway, thanks Devs for your time and efforts and thank you for an awesome update. I look forward to getting stuck in properly when I come back to the game on a more full on bases.

So now you guys have to see the foliage like ps4 players.

Too bad we(ps4) don’t get to see water like PC players

True, but when you spend over a thousand bucks on a gaming PC, a few extra QoL features aren’t much to expect or ask for.

And, don’t get me wrong, I also own a PS4 and an Xbox One and there are some games that I simply won’t play on PC as they’re much better experienced on Console. PS4 also has games that will never see a release on PC or XB and Vice Versa. So, there’s benefits on both sides, and rightly so.

I get it as I have a $2500 laptop and all the systems. But what I don’t get is why ps4 can’t get things like that. It’s more than capable of handling it. Especially the Pro.

Good point and I honestly don’t understand it either. Take No Man’s Sky for example. I’ve had serious issues getting it to run properly on PC since the Visions update but it runs smooth as silk on my OG PS4. The procedural generation of 18 Quintilian planets is rendered with each voxel the size of a molecule and yet it handles water transparency and all the other bells and whistles without issue.

It’s a head scratcher but the Devs must have their reasons. Personally, I have no idea lol.

You’re right. I don’t really see any difference now (i9 RTX 2080)

You’ll be able to see the different from a higher elevation.

The crops use the same system - so if the foliage was reduced (as before) then all the crops would vanish. Additionally you’d not be able to find the wild variations.

We added some light sources to the surface resources to make them easier to find.

So we PC players no longer have an advantage over PS4 players, by turning down the foliage setting to find ground resources more easily? I see what ya’ll did there. lol I think it’s cool :+1:

Now I need to go see what it looks like from a treetop…

Ah righty. Desert swords though don’t seem to have a light source (not sure about others as I’ve only tried t1 and t2 worlds so far) and the Rosetta Nox could do with a bit of a ramp up on the brightness of the light as they are still quite hard to see. Especially on large flat areas.

Anyway, fair enough. Challenge accepted! lol. Oh and, would this be a good time to request we get some Stilts in the future? Ya know, for the mobile higher elevation so we can see these things? Yep, we need stilts now. This is a formal request! lol.

Thanks, James! o7

Actually, I just had another idea. Is there any chance, James that sometime in the future we could get a setting for the Camera angle/height adjustment? For both PC and PS4? I know PC players can edit some file to do this but it would be cool if we could all do this easily within the game settings.

Just another suggestion that I think could really benefit all gatherers out there and it could also potentially help us deal with this resource visibility issue…
