I haven’t explored other planets in a while, so I wasn’t using my grappling hook very often. This topic may have already come up, but if not:
The new grapple controls R and F are very difficult to handle and keep my hands on the ASWD, especially when swinging side to side. Is there any way to switch it back to the old system of SPACE and C? Can it be done from the keybindings?
Just to confirm, you’ll lose the ability to Creep and Jump if this were to happen. That means if you’re trying to drag something around in the world you can’t jump up a block if you needed to.
-when i’m standing in ground pressing space makes you jump normally but when i’m in air i can move up with the grappling. if i like to move with grappling hook i need to jump and press space again to actually move up with it or just walk off from a cliff and press space to move up. same thing when pressing c to creep it make me go down but when im standing in ground pressing c makes me creep normally.
Grapple generally doesn’t work very well compared to what it used to so I don’t even know what reeling function you’re talking about @luke-turbulenz
If I fire at a player or item or mob and use the r/f keys barely anything happens for it to be useful.
Reeling works at a snails pace compared to what it used to, so since you’ve stripped away some usability of the tool I’d definitely prefer the ability to assign space to combo jump/reel in.
If you’d done the opposite (made it better) I could totally see the benefit in separate controls, but you haven’t unfortunately
Ah! That sounds more like a balancing problem. The update went live without a thorough balancing pass, Ollie is working on that at the moment. It might be worth waiting for that data before making any wholesale changes.
Fair enough, but just to be clear - we can’t currently assign space to grapple and jump can we? It will clear the previous keybinding or it seems to for me.
Before the new Grapple updates, the grapple worked with SPACE and C just fine when in the air, and JUMP and CROUCH were fine when on the ground. I was just asking if it could be put back to the way it was. There was no problem with the system as it used to be.
And yes, I also agree with how slow it is now, but as said that’s just a balance issue.
But just to confirm that everyone is aware - that the Grapple update has introduced a new feature that isn’t the same as before.
It’s now possible to stand on the ground and grapple creatures, items and other players. This case is NEW. It’s this case that triggered the control change - as you couldn’t operate the Grapple whilst moving as expected on the ground.
Now it’s possible the new solution is a bad solution, and we obviously appreciate the feedback - but only if the feedback takes into account this new usage.
If we want the old controls, then we either need to: dump the support for grappling entities (that we thought was fun) or accept that your movement is compromised when grappling an entity.
If we could have the option to also assign grapple-up to space (whilst keeping jump on the same key), I think that would be best.
The main reason for the grapple hook is movement/transport so I don’t think we should compromise that reason for grappling entities. Keyboard/Mouse users generally found space/C much easier to operate whilst running and moving at the same time.
Grappling entities is cool and some people might enjoy that a lot, so I’d say my favourite order of options would be:
Spacebar will both jump and grapple-up, C will both crouch and grapple-down, R & F also retain their bindings to make grappling entities possible without jumping.
As above for Space/C except when the grapple is attached to an entity, it’s bindings change from Space/C to R/F. No double binding grapple controls.
Spacebar will both jump and grapple-up, C will both crouch and grapple-down. We can still grapple entities but you can’t jump/crouch whilst pulling along.
I know this won’t be a popular comment in this thread, but as its still “feedback” I will go ahead and say it… but frankly I have already adapted to the new key assignments and I am hardly inconvenienced by the changes. Dragging spitters to their fiery doom when deep underground has become my go-to option when mining rubies. The greatest problem I have with the new grapple is the frequent delay before the connection activates between the handle and hook. It is also considerably more difficult to pull oneself out of narrow holes. Swinging is not as pronounced as before.
OK, how about instead of making drastic changes to the system, why not just make it keybind-able. Thereby those who like it can keep it and those who don’t can change it to something else.
Maybe I can change mine to V and B, still able to keep my hands on ASWD that way…or maybe X and V. Either way just not R and F.
