Have some decency when digging straight down

If you’re going to dig straight down, have the decency to fill the top 1 or 2 blocks back in. A random hole to the to deep mining depths = death.

Or just start with small 3-4 steps stairs… in with a block above the actual hole.

Good Point.

I’ve been guilty of this, I’ll try and do better!

Let me add that if possible use a block that is obviously out of place to plug the hole, like a piece of non-native timber. So someone doesn’t accidentally dig down into the pit without realizing.

I’ve been guilty of this too, I just figured the chances of someone finding a one square hole out in the wilderness before it regenerated was negligible … although I have killed myself by falling down one of my own twice. I bumped to the surface using the Sanctum portal and then promptly fell down the hole  since then I’ve been making a few steps first before going straight down.

Bring a grapple man. Always a grapple.

I’m guilty of this. But I do have it in my head someone might fall in… sadly i’m an asshole so I just cackle at the thoughts

Usually I dig stairs all the way down because of habits from other games. When I do dig down, I double-plug the hole with space between the “plugs”, in case anyone would break the first plug.

Sometimes I begin with a stair, then continue with a hole. I usually don’t bother to plug it, but I make sure the hole isn’t located where one would expect the last step to be to prevent accidents by momentum.

Another technique is to dig 5-6 blocks down, dig one step to the side, then continue the real hole.

I am also one of these people… I’m sorry, I’ll be more considerate in the future!

Do you think this could be indicative of there being both less and smaller caves on the new worlds? So players are less likely to fall to their deaths when knocking out the floor below them. I don’t remember this being an issue in the old universe.

I suspect it’s more to do with increased traffic halting world regeneration; the holes hang around far longer, particularly in high density areas and high traffic areas. Some PS hubs have become death traps :face_with_head_bandage:

Even if you close the hole, someone will dig exactly this point and fall into the rest of the tunnel

I think some stairs, or access from the side (mountains) will help much.

I enjoyed having a small slope to land on at the delta cancret PS however over time the ground around this particular area is starting to look disgusting with people carving up lines and holes everywhere, which of course will never regenerate

death traps

I got a really good chuckle out of this one (but it is true) :joy:

It is not that people should not be more considerate and plug their “Hole Into The Dark Unknown” But is this highlighting (as has been said) the issue with regeneration rates?

How about putting sponge at the bottom? It supposedly prevents fall damage.

You can also use these holes to kill creatures! My base in Alnitans is underground and has a large hole in the ceiling and we would get free meat all the time from things falling down it.

While I agree with idea, and I do it anyway, it also gives you protection from something unwanted jumping in while you dig cough hoppers cough, I think we’ll continue to see such holes, people just don’t care.

This is going to git gud in a couple of weeks when the hordes of the great unwashed flock in. Watch where you step, it’s going to be like a cow pasture on Free Grass Day.
