Me and few others worked this out during beta. I’m not sure if it’s changed any since beta, but 2 x 2 plots will be a dot on a local planet.
We drew the Boundless logo on Therka, and you could see it from Septerfon.

Indeed you have to go 2x2 and up.
My main build is 47x47 but you can’t really see the grass at most places around my build because its 1 plot wide.
Is that a giant green cookie?

So to the right of the red square is a little red circle i drew on there, that plot is underwater and the visible surface of it is 3x3 plots big.
To the right of that is the Hanging Gardens in Winterfell (Previously Neighborinoville) which is like 20 plots wide and something like 40-50 plots tall.
