I really want to build something really big and cool but the only way i tend to build is just by winging it but that only turns out good like 20% of the time.
I was just wondering how people build such things, as when im travelling around somethings are just insanely big and look epic, so when your building something like this do you follow some kind of plan or do you just wing it and hope for the best?
Pictures for inspration, MagicaVoxel for a draft. MagicaVoxel takes a bit of getting used to, but itās a great tool, easily accessible and you can share files with people to collaborate. I highly recommend :>
Since I havenāt had a computer for 10 years (the last one, I gave it to my nephew).
I just use an Android app on my smartphone to calculate geometric shapes for large volumes. It helps me a lot since Iām not good at math.
The rest is by show of hands following my inspiration.
I always build big in mc. This translated basically (not without its own difficulty) to boundless.
What i do is have a basic idea or a plan of what i want to build.
Scout for a location that fits your build and claim the base layer of your future build completely (replotting or adding plots later above or below as you start building).
Claim more then you need ahead as you can always remove your claim afterwards.
Big builds exist mostly out of plots that are copied. Design one and copy it several times.
This mostly happens for buildings (organic builds are harder).
Building plot based makes it easier as you canāt plot on block off as they are āgridlockedā.
But that said plotting and planning ahead which plot has what āfunctionā is key.
This one road, that one decoration feature, this one belongs to these for this building and so on.
You can always ad and mix plot function later as you build but the ābasicā layout is pretty much needed for big builds so you can see what terrain you have to work with.
I used to build uneven in MC, meaning doors that are 1or3 blocks wide, roads 3 blocks wide and so on. This is harder to do in Boundless for me because a lot in Boundless is āevenā plots 8x8x8, some block patterns are 2 wide, Doors Canāt go more than 2 wide and so on. (not a bad thing but just made it a little harder)
I wil say use the tools given to you In this post if you need them . But I donāt use them as i build plot based, for organic building i would consider it but havenāt so far in these 2 years. (Edit mean the build programs)
I think thats probably the best way for me, i have already started putting the plots down more than needed and then flattening the areas out, and im making the roads take up a whole plot to make the planning easier. I guess i will keep doing this and hopefully i can take some inspiration from other builds and then look at the empty spaces and decide how best to utilize those space.
Im aiming to build up to the great city prestige value, because i like to set myself impossible goals lol. Im a long way away from that at 2 mil prestige, so i guess i got a lot of building to do.
I think a lot of this depends on the sort of person you are. Iām not a planner, I like to get into it and work stuff out. Working in situ (or winging it!) you can respond directly to your surroundings and they help define the build I find.
I get a basic idea in my head and simply wing it. The idea I had for R3DFIRE was much different than how it turned out and honestly, if I had have planned it ahead based on that idea, it probably wouldnāt have turned out so well in my own opinion.
Sometimes winging it is the best way to go. (unless youāre wanting to build something based on something on TV, a movie or a book) Just get an idea and see where your creativity takes you from there.
One thing i dont like about doing things from some model is that you can see how much is left⦠When it done⦠Whats Then?.. With
Freestyling you can do things until you run out of plots.
Thanks, Monkeys. The only limit is your imagination. Some would say that plots could be another limit but in this game, thereās no limit to them either as long as youāre willing to be patient and earn them as you level.
Remember, itās a marathon, not a race. Heck, R3DFIRE has taken 2 years already and itās still not finished lol.
Enjoy building your creation and take your time. As a wise fictional, animated cleaner once said, āYou canāt rush artā.
