For the 3rd time in under 2 months, I’ve had to redesign my crafting space due to expansion and demand of my goods. The newest expansion requires me to add 4 more machines to the old setup of 6 machines I previously had. Plus I needed more shelf space. And I have 4 titan furnaces. It’s a total pain.
Here’s what I try to go for. Would like input or screenshots of your space if you care to share:
Ergonomics and feng shui. I want all my machines accessible within reach. Or most of them. I hate having to run across the room to one storage area and then run back to the machine.
I’m now trying to hide my coils either behind a wall or under the floor.
Once the end product is crafted, I then move them to another area so they are ready to be sold when needed.
I’ll share pics of my newest design when I"m home.
PS- I hate that the coils take up a block of space and must have 1 block of space b/w it and the machine. I understand that the electrical charge takes up a block of its own due to design mechanics. But I hate it. Ughh…
PPS- I know there are crafters with larger setups than mine. I think you are all masochist.
Check out An Awkward Place on Maryx. I don’t have a screenshot but it’s a nice setup… each machine is its own room and is accessed through the wall of a hallway.
The machine wall is infinitely expandable by adding another line of 6 plots in the back for each extra row of machines, but I haven’t had the need for it yet.
Alternatively, if I needed to have an expansion of both storage and machines, then I’d repeat the pattern in another floor, taking another 6x6x1 area into the reserved space below.
I have a separate, much messier area for unpowered mass-crafting (24 refineries, 12 workbenches, 84 crafting tables, etc)
In pre-release worlds I embedded all my machines in the floor and had storage above. I had different sections dedicated to crafting different things, main area was tool crafting so I had 2 centraforges, 2 workbenches, a mixer and a compactor. and of course all the gems and leather and crafted tools in the storage above (pictured below)
the gem blocks are chiselled to slabs so you can walk underneath the coils as well as the spark cords!
but not only that, you can also access all of the coils from the floor above!
and then I had another section for food and brews (my kitchen :P) that had 2 extractors, 2 mixers and a workbench.
expansion wasn’t needed by then since my build was so big to begin with, but with this setup it is pretty easy to expand, just make some room to the side and bury everything heh
Check Black Light’s shop @deenw I used that since EA, 8 machines of each. 4 blocks between each. Separated by 2 wings and connected via 2 spark cord arrays. Haven’t had any issues with storage since the bulk storage is kept in a different building only need crafting mats in the workshop.
I chose a fairly compact design so I can access storage, coil-run machines (around storage units…space behind so I can spanner those babys) and non-coil machines (centre) within a couple of steps. Have a bit of spare space behind storage if I need to expand a bit.
Portal in middle section connects directly to my shop.
The Mad Scientist setup along the wall for powered machines… cause it looks cool =P
All coils are easily repairable from anywhere in front of machine, and the Spark links act as a fence so you can’t hurt yourself…
One wall is made up of Crafting Tables, and Furnaces are part of the wall near the Spark Array.
It was a recent remodel, but seems to be working great!
You never said it can only be end game people with all the adv coils.
This one shows my Storage and only machine with 2 adv coils I don’t use. I use the little Workstations there for storaging all my items, which isn’t much.
One thing i learnt is aim big and give yourself lots of space… then double it.
I’m on my 4th settlement now and am using 10 times the space i thought was reasonable on the others.
There’s a really good thread somewhere where devs were looking for a workshop/factory to feature in a trailer that has heaps of good design inspiration, but i cant find the link, and that is very helpful of me.
I’m assuming you guys trained up Control Bonus in order to reach those high shelves? My shelf space is a 3x3 grid but I may need to mimic you guys in order to minimize the constant back and forth.
I like the 3x3 storage, cause you just click the middle and see everything. I always lose things if theyre bigger cause it depends which block you click on.
I think ive found a relatively compact way to layout 4 of each machine. On my phone so dont have pics, but its kind of like…
oxo
exe
oxo
O = machines. E =empty. X = spark link. I have them sticking out from the wall horizontally, so there is room for 4 coils each down the sides, and one behind. And all 4 machines are in reach from the same spot. I’ll grab a screenshot tonight.
All my characters (even without control bonus) can reach any shelf, since they’re 6 high and you only need to reach the middle one (height 5) of each 3x3 cluster to see that entire section.
I was working within the constraints of a single-plot height to make the cube infinitely stackable vertically if needed, so it goes:
Ceiling / Storage x 6 / Floor
In the machine section:
Ceiling / air / air / coils / air / machine / air / coils instead of floor.
I also have the spark generators (4x4) embedded into the floor just behind the access door to the coil area (in the middle of the machine wall) with two power lines running separately from its corners to avoid the issue of having too many spark links in a row (bits of wall removed to expose the power line):
Feel free to PM me when you’re in game if you want a tour. The Cube isn’t much to look at, but I find it super practical.
(Pardon the mess back there in that screenshot, I’ve split my 24 refinery and mixer coils temporarily to some extra machines that I threw in the back there to craft shop stands and bricks)
My workshop is coils under floor, only top of final block of machine at floor height, so I look down to craft and have 3x3 storage above each machine with gleam carvings separating them.
Then in the small space for coils, spark cords and spannering that I only visit infrequently, I lined two walls with crafting tables because they are uuuuuuuugly.
You crafters with small, clever workshops will never get your top Speed Runner feat with those designs.
We hid 3 of the pieces of the machine and the coils under the floor with 1 piece of the machine set in the floor then the floor bevel chiseled for east clicking.
I know, is awful. I’m trying to figure out a nice setup that gives me the option to fix everything without the need to go to another floor or room. Crete setup looks nice… hope is not patented.
