How do you organize your different materials?

First off… in this game, I’m a hoarder!! I love to build factories with massive caches of materials. I’m currently building a new factory (my 5th factory iteration actually), and I’m struggling alittle to decide on how I want to organize my blocks. I’m curious how other fellow in game hoarders are organizing their storage?

Do you organize by colour, by block type (ie separate storage for meta, igneous, sedi ), by colour number, by planet, or do you have a cool creative system that you would like to boast???

We have some very creative people in our community and I would love to hear or see your designs if you’re willing to share!

Thanks in advance!!

I wish there was a way to select an option that smart stacks only stack the same material (like igneous stone) along with of only a certain color. would make chucking stuff into boxes after running around gathering so much easier. if like material and colors were all that would stack together.

I’ve been making coloured stone storage boxes and have organised by colour number. Still a long way to go until the collection is complete but it will hopefully serve as an easy way to grab a particular colour block for building with. If you are in the TNT planet hub just go through one of the tall doors and you will find it. It goes all around the hub.
I am in two minds about changing it up for alphabetical order so you don’t have to look at a colour list

I kinda use a chest per item depending on how high is the drop rate.

Like for example hopper eyes go to a small box, wildstock and spitter share a chest.

Orbs, lamellas, leafs, and petals share a single chest.

Gems/lucents go to the same chest.

Peat, salt, sand, gravel, etc each have a single chest.

And exos have their own section I group everything that belongs to a same exo.

I will definitely come take a look. Thanks for the feed back.

right now I"m using shelves with multiple stacks of each item that can be smart stacked togeather. For example I’ll have 3 slots filled with each kind of blood (so 9 stacks) so when I shift click a mixed blood stack into it, it all sorts. Once the last stack of a kind goes to a smart stack, I take the two full stacks out and split the last stack into 3 slots. I then take the smart stacks to mass-storage.

This allows me to have items in small quantities around my machines, while also supporting large-scale mass storage.

I have alittle similar setup. I have rooms to group mats into categories such as “mining-ores”, another for “mining-lucent”, etc… then “gathering - food”, “hunting- drops” etc. These rooms are 1 plot each and I have 2 storage blocks and ornate block storage below. I have a different setup for my blocks. I have 16 rows of 16 shelf blocks, 2 high with stylish storage below. This is for rock and stone. Then another duplicate area of this for refined and deco blocks. Currently working on a brick area, and a marble/ mosaic area as well.

For rock, trunks and gleam I have a shop stands for each color (in order by number). Obviously not all are filled currently (as not all colors have not been collected by me - except gleam). Additional overflow will go into the new chests as I need it. Eventually I will try to have all the blocks per color in shop stands.

What is “organize”

I am in the process of converting all of mine to some variation of this storage setup with the visible storage indicating what is in the closed storage closest to it.

I’m working on a new factory myself. I’ll send screens when I get home

For blocks I have a new storage area I am going to be working on that will be sorted first by “colour” and then by “shade”, similar to how I have my goo/paint organized but on a much larger scale. Details on exactly how and how big are yet to be decided.

There are 28 colours (if black/white/grey are considered 1 colour) and there are 3 (rose) -
to 16 (yellow) shades of each colour.

Yea It’s a huge area…my idea of storage is stuff everywhere so I take a hour just to find what I was looking for…Lol… I know I have it somewhere.:rofl:

Basically the same method I’m currently using, haha. So to save myself a little time I’m going to spend a WHOLE lot of time making a better system, lol.

first everything goes into dump storage chests (plant, animal, exo, gear, minerals…etc), later it gets sorted more specifically:

frequently used building materials

by color

Stuff everywhere.

Sorted by type into open storages, mass stuff that I buy occasionally like sap are kept in barrels.
No hoarding I only collect stuff that is needed for the next building phase and leftovers from the last building phase until it’s too little to keep.

Color pigments by color type, all azure, red etc. in open storage blocks sorted by specific color.
(It’s always a big hassle to sort in goo harvests so I tend to collect 3 to 4 harvest in a barrel before I sort it in).

I throw things into open spots on shelves, in crafting tables, and in chests and hope for the best :joy:

But seriously that’s what I do. I generally remember where the items are that I need.

I tend to sort the items by activity but to be honest about that it doesn’t seem to work.
Know where to go to get them out of storage but if I forget to take something out of storage i have to walk back again to go and get it.

Also tried to sort mats by machine usage but i find it rather messy (and doesn’t work in the end for me).

A good way to store everything? Haven’t found a way yet but did find out a few months back my first storage was to small and fits about 8 times now in my new storage when finished.

Also ill keep an eye out on this topic😉
