Word just needs to get out more just like it needed to before. It had very little advertising at all. I am constantly looking for building/crafting games and I never saw Boundless just happened to be invited by a friend to play it.
Development would be great but with a very small player count if I were a company I’d be hard pressed to want to develop for 60-70 people with no guarantee of new players.
Post on social and get people to try the game. I plan to buy a bunch of keys and give them away again. I’m hoping we can get Monumental to use social media again and get some new players in.
Person here that sometimes streams → YEARS AGO the various Boundless social media accounts would push out creators their content, which made more people make Boundless content for the chance of getting featured.
That stopped eventually. I’m not saying that made people make less content, but it probably was part of the reason.
The only reason I stopped playing Boundless was because my PC went down so I focused on playing Destiny and Elite Dangerous on the XBox. In Elite Dangerous we were doing the Distant World II expedition. That was actually a pretty big thing, several new articles on it, took months with thousands of people, would love to see something like that for Boundless. Something that takes huge numbers of players to accomplish.
Honestly, the biggest problem for the game isn’t word of mouth.
It’s the new player experience that’s the problem, since it isn’t too easy to get into without someone guiding you.
It might even help, if it was easier to find other people that are online, and be able to chat with them more easily. I know that would’ve made it far easier for me, way back in the day when I started out.
I agree the NPE sucks but you can look at Steam sales and wishlists and what not and from what I was told wishlist numbers were pretty good, but apparently the game had a boatload of problems with full planets etc. I also wasn’t around then, but I’ve seen horror stories on it.
I do think a VERY large problem is advertising and having Sony doing it was another problem. I’m just using myself and several people I have spoken with over the years and recently as last week as an example.
I am always looking for games just like Boundless, I’m always searching Steam and various other platforms and I never saw it anywhere. Not that I’m anything special, but if I didn’t see it as a person in the target audience for the genre, I know many others didn’t either.
Advertising wasn’t the only issue, but I do think it was a major fail, along with a terrible launch as I mentioned and the NPE. But I think getting more players interested is an attainable early goal as NPE would require some development and I don’t think that will occur without more players.
Oh yeah I completely agree with you on this. There should be a few new planets added per ‘region’, considering how crowded it has gotten in some cases.
Though I don’t feel like I’m one to talk, since I’ve taken up a decent part of an island on Dzassak by myself… Really do wish I wasn’t so alone on that planet, whenever I check in.
It occured to me the other day that i actually wonder whether an improvement that could be made is how the game selects which planet you’re going to spawn on as a new player.
Currently no matter how many alts i make, or new steam accounts, it seems to always put me on soch or tana. No idea how or why it decides that, but theoretically a better way to spawn people is to prefer planets with higher player averages.
I’d almost be willing to bet that it’s a better player experience when you try to repeatedly drop new players (depending on region) on the same planet over and over until that planet has a good average, and then move on to a new planet.
I know i personally rather see a player on the compass, than not at all. Even if i’m not planning to build near or interact with them.
It is funny how many follow thru on the objectives. Those give you the basics, by the time you get thru those you have met people and they usually will help you from there. The community is amazing as far as that goes, New players ask how to get somewhere and it seems like most times someone will go find them and give them a hand.
I’d like to know how it deals with population in that case, because as it is most tier 1 and 2 planets have a lower than 1 CCU which seems like a worse player experience than anything.
It started me on a US region planet, weirdly enough. I’m in Europe, and ended up finding Dzassak on my own accord, before finding a spot I really liked and settling there to this day.
Still want to keep building my giant artificial cave, but the biggest stopper has been the quietness of that planet these days, alongside the quiet state the game when there’s other games also tugging at the brain. ømø’’
I never actually met any people while doing the basics. I only ever found someone else by pure chance, when I saw @IM2COOL4U001 's tower in the distance. Pretty sure they’re the first person I ever met, years ago. Helped me get my bearings, when I was just by myself until then.
It just seems like it’s not doing that to me. Years ago when I landed on soch, no matter where i went i was blocked off in absolutely all directions, so there being almost nothing plotted doesn’t seem to have been the reason.
There was deffo a good population on the planet back then at least.
On tana on the other hand, where i landed on my new alt recently, almost nothing is plotted and conversely almost 0 players.
I think the game usually drops you down not too far from someone else, but still with distance enough that you won’t be blocked in. Or at least it’s supposed to.
For sure my first landing was only a couple little houses anywhere near me. I never seen anyone for a few days though. Then one day i am building and I hear Atoobio! I was like what was that? It was Kairoos and Whitlet from EZPZ they gave me a few things then opened a portal and showed me the world of the game. I am not sure I would have stuck around if it hadn’t been for that interaction. I had no idea what was possible to do in the game until then. Here I am 10k+ hours later still playing lol!
