I’m specced into mining, don’t have grapple mastery.
Iron fist does substantially more damage than iron hammer. There are places where you one hit rock with iron fist but can’t with iron hammer. You can forge iron hammer… but you can iron fist too. And in those places digging 2x1 corridor is faster with iron fists than iron hammer.
I didn’t test any gold hammer vs gold fist… because IMHO currently golden hammers are useless so I didn’t even bother to craft them.
And gem hammers are better than fists, but I’m not sure if they would always be if we would have gem fists.
Atm the moment the grapple skill thst is supposed to increase fist damage doesn’t work. Only power and the damage epic increase it.
Before last night I was using a combination of bombs and fists to mine on t5+ worlds and one-shotting most blocks. Now I have gem hammers they’re much more efficient.
why would u not compare forged hammers with iron fists… simple forging material is available early on and iron is pretty good to forge. as long as u dont have anything else: go for it :DD and a tunneler iron hammer with increased damage might be better than fists… plus this dual wielding fists to increase damage output might get a fix anyway
I said “blocks”, not “rocks”. Fists are good at breaking all block types. Are there better tools for certain blocks? Yes, but a Fist is good at breaking all of them. Try breaking Sand or Wood with a hammer and see how that goes for you.
I’m not gonna speculate, what may or may not future bring because it’s futile. If you compare forged hammers to fists, compare it to forged fists. I don’t forge iron any more because it really is waste of forging material IMHO, same as crafting low tier forging resources etc.

I know your question is regarding the iron fist but I use gold fists as a preference over the iron fist. There a shop in merika (look for BIG E in these forums) that’s sells for 400 each, but average prices range from 500 - 800. I have epic damage and 4 power, I use them mostly for killing creatures and I find they last a long time for me. The block breaking is an additional bonus for me, because I can shoot the blocks beneath spitters, and hoppers and confin them to a place where it may be easier to immobilize or isolate them. Everyone has their own preference. I’d suggest giving it a try.
and i disagree again… its the most basic ressources needed more often in forging with low tier material… as long as u dont have power, why not using what u currently have? Theres plenty of everything around.
Also it was actually my point that forged hammer is better than forged fist for tunneling because of the better stuff u can apply for ur hammer for digging

In my opinion it is a waste of materials. I have enough materials to mass craft anything. And yet I choose wisely what to craft or forge. My opinion, as I stated, is that low tier forging is a waste. You have every right to disagree, but it is you that constantly add specific conditions to support your claims like “u dont have power”, or hammer forged with specific boons vs fists without them.

if by " effective" u mean actually “versatile” i agree with u… but its fact that the tools specific for blocks remove those blocks more effective than fists. and i calculate forging with low materials in cause when u have iron fists and iron hammer u also have the means to forge them
look 3 threads below there was someone buying totem with auto collect for like 1k c. u can craft this stuff with a material cost that is negligible. theres no reason to not use the centraforge in early to midgame

Thank you, will do so. My son and I are making a outpost on Merika. No playing tonight, last night we played for I think five hours, my back is rebelling against playing that long again so soon. I reminded him that I am 63, not 34 so can’t do all night gaming very often.
Invest into kinetic armor skill and those nasty spotters can’t harm you anymore. Impulse armor protects from bombs. If you are a lousy shot, you can tank for your son this way
