i.e if i know there are supposed to be players near me (because i launched on the planet a few miles west id where 3 players were supposed to be.) is there a map I can pull up ingame that shows me what direction Im walking and ho close I am to those players? (yes i know the compass above you sows direction. But i dont see players on it… or what players looks like on it)
Players will be a red icon, friends will be green.
There is actually an atlas that you can make in game but its meant for finding resources and doesn’t show players on it, only hotspots of resources you put into it. (Like coal, gems, fibrous leaves, orbs etc.)

Oh also the red player icons will only show you who is nearby, whereas friends (green) will be visible across the entire planet. Same with the capital (yellow) and your home (orange).
so that red icon that looks more like a structure is a person?

Why do you need them as a friend out of interest?
To add permissions, as it seems you know, they are already on the list.
If you were hoping to warp to your alt’s location, that’s not possible, even if you are friended, as you can never both be online at the same time.
the automatic friending system is a bit bugged, i started a new character (on a separate steam account from my main) and said yes add steam friends, but when my new alt was in game everyone looked friended but my main didn’t have the new player friended. i had to friend my alt manually, even though to my alt my main was already friended.

It isn’t automatic, it’s semi automatic… So you need to click the add steam friends on each character manually as soon as another character is created by one of your own friends.
