I’ve explored a fair few towns and cities and I thought it would be nifty if I were able to leave a message for someone if they weren’t online or I wasn’t friends with them. I could write them a letter and drop it in their post box to read at a later date, be it a “hello” or “you got any more gems for sale?”
There’s obviously easier ways of communicating such as directly with @username or through discord, but an in-game letter would have a different feeling to it, there’s a bit of effort in there by the author and it would stand out more… a bit like a letter IRL as opposed to a text message! Would be good for requesting orders from sellers, showing an interest in a particular item or leaving instructions for a fellow guild member when you’re afk.
I suggest 2x craftable items; letter and letterbox.
Further elaborating, letters would obviously be 1-time use items. Authors names are visible on the paper (both character and gamertag) for validation/identification reasons.
Whaddyathink folks?

I would love this, some sort of way of leaving messages for offline players would be useful, you could send a message to a neighbour if you want to ask about expansion plans to avoid conflict for example as well that way, maybe even allow a drop of a location token as well?

it’s a cool idea, but what if you want to send a message to a player that hasn’t built a mailbox? what if you need to get a hold of them, like if they are unknowingly blocking your build and need them to adjust some plots…
This is where I would prefer more of a digital messaging system that you can send messages with that you can send messages at any time to any player (just enter player name)
although a crafted mailbox could be used to gift items to other players as well.

Dropping off tokens, items… you’re on to something there! Little drop boxes!
The idea stemmed from Ark: Survival Evolved (I thought it was an original idea, but I remembered later on where I’d seen it before) You could craft notes using early consumables, the Boundless equivalent would be foliage. It was never really utilised by the general player for any real purpose (that I knew of anyway), but I used to use it to leave messages in players storage or sleeping bodies.
Ark had a player driven economy (cement paste!) but lacked the economy mechanics Boundless has. Letters, Letterboxes… Gift Boxes for those items?
An email system would be too convenient and relied upon for buying, selling, DM’s etc. It knocks the balance of exploration, trade and networking out of sync. The current limitations we have promotes the other two core values with the use of portals and shops.
The letterbox idea is a sort of additional tool that operates within the constraints of trade, communication and exploration. You couldn’t DM a guy at the bottom of a T6 planet to say hi, but you shouldn’t be able to. (We’ve got discord for that) You could however mail someone asking for an unused plot they’ve not built on, or to share coordinate data for their shop if they’re looking for a steady coal supplier? That is of course if they have a mailbox
Business cards! Coordinate data, planet, item for sale!
you completely missed my point. my suggestion is a solution for communication problems (that happen a lot) when dealing with settlements.
Don’t dismiss an idea just because it doesn’t fit into your ideals.
Mine is a valid suggestion.

I understood what you were getting at and never said it wasn’t valid. I didn’t mean to come across as attacking your suggestion, I apologise.
What I’m saying is it’s OP. It would be like playing with cheats; it’s fun and awesome for a while, but the vanilla game (and it’s limitations) are what make the experience.
What if… you could DM a players Master Beacon? The only quarrels involving settlers would be plot space, so being able to mail a beacon would be handy.

thanks for clarifying.
The thing is, without something like it, it makes it really hard to communicate when someone isn’t in your time zone. and for someone that is malicious or simply unaware, they will definitely not have crafted a mailbox.
[edit]
ahem… to clarify on my end… I do like this idea and think it would be nice to have both
[edit 2]
DMing the master beacon is a fantastic idea. I would be okay with that vs a universal e-mail type system.
excellent compromise

would be pretty cool for moment we need to mess with beacon rights to make our mailcenter work
