I hit 50 today and I hadn’t really bothered to check or ask whether, once you hit 50, the next levels are all 200K XP or if you “start over” leveling like you did at 1 as far as XP progression is concerned. My hope is that it was somewhere in the middle.
I was really, REALLY disheartened to find out that all levels beyond 50 are 200K XP. I knew this was how it was during EA, but I was hoping there might have been an adjustment for 1.0. In my mind, this renders the secondary spec in the Exchange a worthless purchase (I didn’t purchase it and I won’t be). I feel that, at 50, the additional levels should follow the same XP progression as 1-50 did or, all levels should be somewhere in the area of 50-100K XP apiece. Here is my logic:
I started right away on August 16 when 1.0 went live. I have ONLY played this character aside from briefly making an alt. I have put in almost 200 hours since August 16th. I took off work so I could play this game all day long. My family knew how excited I was for Boundless 1.0 and gave me ample time to myself so I could binge Boundless. Playing the game this aggressively, is something people do when they fall into 1 of 2 categories:
You are a truly hardcore player whom has ample free time to dedicate to just this game. This is, by every metric I’ve seen over the last decade, now a minority of players regardless of your game’s genre.
You planned around the 1.0 release and binged the game but will have to return to a semi-normal schedule moving forward
For the vast majority of us, getting to level “100” so a second spec is fully fleshed out will be many, many months out. Some might claim that you can be “effective” with a spec by level 15 or 20 but that was not my experience. It wasn’t until around level 35 or 40 that I actually felt pretty sufficient on this character.
Please rework 50+ XP to be less of a mindless grind - ESPECIALLY if you are going to (and should) nerf both bomb mining and chiseling from an XP standpoint.
Given the time limit protection of switching skillsets, I could probably go as far as allowing each skillsets to have different XP basket (e.g. If you’re level 20 then you switch to your level 1 spec, you will now level up as a level 1 character but skillpoints gained can only be used on that skillset.)
Right now, skillsets are really useless and it doesn’t differ much with alts in terms of functionality. Its only benefit is you won’t have the annoying problem of naming your character while other people can still recognize you (which on the other hand, is the benefit of alts if you want to play in incognito and should be retained).
I mean, maybe I am the minority here but I really love the existing system. I want to gain plots on one character not many, so while I do have two alts I only use them for crafting and such, my main gets plots for days.
I mean, if you don’t wanna do the post 50 grind then don’t, you have up to 10 total characters… if you can’t do everything you want with 10 characters… then idk what exactly you are looking for
I think about it like this, additional skill sets are put in game just to shut up players who were complaining that they can’t do everything with one skill set. First they are prohibitively expensive in xp, second you have limitations on how often you can switch between skill sets. Right now game is strongly pushing towards alt chars.
Yeah… I’m kind of regretting getting a secondary skillset at this point, I don’t like having alts, so a secondary skillset was the obvious choice for me.
Well, that was until I realised how it actually worked.
I suggested right at the start to make the 50+ leveling easier like 50% of what it costs first (or even let it be 200k xp for lvl 100 but start with 50k xp for level 51 and then scale up to 200k xp).
Making it exactly as the initial 50 levels would be too easy, I think.
I am not certain if this is a fair comparison @Dhusk. During the past few weeks many of us have reached 50 but in a fledgeling universe.
AOE forge tools were only available recently
a lot of time has been spent building up and trying out the new systems
a partial goal for all of us has been to establish our machines ect.
exp pies are not easily available
Before I left on vacation (sadness), I made a smart stack of titanium hammers with AOE 4 and a bulk craft of exp pies.
The exp I gain from that will be crazy high compared to when I started out with iron hammers.
I think that the exp total should stay high, since our efficency has increased in how we gain exp.
Should it be 200k or 175k? I don’t know. I didn’t get past 50 to test how it feels with leveling.
I do want the skill sets. I bought them as they will be passive boosts to my character as I level them. A nice thing that after a time will result in improved efficency with my character.
Agreed. the new skill set is completely useless in its current form as it takes too long and it doesn’t let you level as if you are level 1 again. definitely needs changing.
I’m not going to say I think they’re great, but they’re also not worthless. In the space of two hours, I created an character and (using gear from my main), was able to level them up to the point where they could purchase a second skillset, divide their points equally between two specs and essentially have a character that can craft all the top end consumables and all the top end brews by switching specs (although I don’t have access to a ready supply the ingredients… so that does negate the benefit a little).
Admittedly, they ‘only’ feel like they’re good for crafting characters like this that don’t need stats to support themselves because they never leave the safety of home, but there is a point to skill specs pre-50.
