Mushroom Farming

I think a cool addition for this game would be different mushrooms native to different planet types that only grow over time in certain conditions.

For example, say I live on a Lush Temperate Planet. The planet will spawn say a “Redcap Mushroom” (used in recipes for food and brew) that only periodically grows in a moist, spacious cave. The game would only spawn the mushroom in enclosed areas of rock that had pools of water within 15 or so blocks. If I want this mushroom, I either have to go exploring caves or I have to make my own mushroom cave farm.

Another type of mushroom might only be found underneath the trunk of a specific tree, another might require high heat and only grown near lava or fire, etc etc.

I think this would work well because it would add more depth to the game, would encourage more exploration and more portal management. Imagine finding a jackpot of rare mushrooms deep in a cave and making a private portal there.

Thanks for listening!

I like this idea. But why stop at mushrooms? All plant-types can have variations that can be this localized and specialized. Even soil, with different grades or qualities (e.g., Hard clay, soft clay, etc.). The trick in designing a system like this is to not simply make one grade always better than all others. For example, hard clay might be best for making bricks, but soft clay is better for item crafting, and so on.
