My Take on Farming

This is new to all of us and many have questions. I don’t have any answers, sorry, but do have some suggestions. And yeah, I know I can’t seem to say things in few words. sorry.

Don’t get frustrated and quit too early. This is a learning experience. In some ways I’m glad that it wasn’t made real easy, dig a hole, toss a seed, pour some water and harvest three days later and get three crops and two seeds for each plant.

What we got is something that will have us thinking of what we need, how we should set it up, find a design/layout that we will like an fits our needs. We get to use our brains.

We get to experiment, try designs that can be functional and appealing to us.

We can see it as a challenge, as a way to do something extra and not count on it for the main source of our food items and what we gather, or that is how I saw it and still see it.

Yes, if you want to make a huge farm and spend all your time working it, planting, growing, harvesting, selling your excess you can and should make a profit.

However, It shouldn’t be that we can toss out some seeds and get a huge bounty and flood the market which can help or hurt, depending.

Right now, the amount of seeds we are finding are less than what we need and should have been given at the start, my opinion. Since we can no longer get them the way we did before, that the numbers we find in regen farms have been dropped, it would have been nice to have been given a nice bumper crop to hold us over and get us started and then lower the numbers, letting us know that it would happen.

But, it wasn’t done that way, and some are struggling to find what they need to tide them over while they search for the seeds. I’ve stated that several types are hard to find. Those who are going I got a nice amount either got there first and cleaned it out, or just got lucky.

But that isn’t the important part, important, but my post is to encourage players who are struggling to hang on, the devs are reading our posts, they will check into it and I know they will do something about it.

The forging has a glitch, and they learned of it and are now working on it. they have the forging problem, the seed problem, lighting problem and who know what other problems they are working on.

Give them a break, give them time to work on all the problems that we know about and ones we don’t.

Let them know, don’t hesitate to state you are having trouble in this and that area, but do so nicely, Please.

And for those of you who don’t have that problem. Try seeing it from their viewpoint, they Are having the problem and don’t need to hear but I have found plenty of such and such. I am glad for you, but that doesn’t help me, in fact some would see it as rubbing their nose in their failure to find the seeds.

So, farming. Can be fun, challenging, frustrating, annoying, nerve-wracking; AND a time to help each other by telling them to visit your farm and maybe, if you have the time, answer a question or two. Maybe provide a few seeds, five or six can be help. I need three items to have a mass craft of something. Sometimes that two or three can be the one that lets them finish what they are working on.

We do need to realize that some aren’t “lucky” like me and no longer work so time wise I can play as much as I want (real live, health keeps me from that, sometimes I can play 6 hours some times just one hour – today is very little play time for me, sadly).
Many here have jobs, family, commitment, sickness, death, marriage, birth and many other events that can keep them from playing as much as they want.

If you are that person, speak up, some can give you a few seeds, advice, something to help you out. A new friend just gave me some flour because I didn’t make ahead and the guild I am part of is being Fantastic and making a farm for me of a couple plants so I can make pies. Her gift to me is letting me make pies for them and for me so we can all pitch in and help each other, they make the farm, I am doing some gathering with them to help find the seeds/plants and I have forged some weapons for them to use. A partnership.

That can be done by those of us who can help each other.

Let’s offer support, not tear down, let state that we understand how stressful it can be to not find seeds or plants because they may have been cleaned out, especially on exo planets, instead of going “I’ve found plenty”. Lets share what we learned that helps, not go you aren’t working hard enough then on it.

Be friendly. Be helpful, Be supportive, Be nice.

off my bandwagon.

I like how everyone’s supposed to be able to farm but it’s hard for new players who can’t get ahold of resources to make fertilizers.

Fertilizer is a later on resource and not meant for low level players. So it would make sense that it will take work to get.

As far as I’m aware, fertilizers are not needed to farm.

even with experience and mid game gear, I have trouble getting it. Doesn’t seem fair. Should be more of it on expos, by the time I here a planets arrived , get home from work, take care of my new born and wife, most of the time all the expos are already stripped

Yea not to basic farm and not really get any yield .

Fertilizer does not increase your yield. All it does is create a chance that your crops will grow faster. So it is not needed at all to farm low or end game farming.

Feels like everyone is in a rush to see 10,000% returns on farms instantly. Its gonna take time, just like real farming.

I started a combustion farm with 40 seeds, and now have about 200 plants… but it did take a few days. And thats just farming the seeds to get it going. Once i hit a few 1000 seed plants i’ll start crop production, but i expect that to take a couple weeks before i see any real returns.

Farming starts slow and takes time, but you only need 1 seed and a bit of patience to get unlimited amounts of anything (except goo).

Ok so starting with one exotic yam seed, how long do you think it will take optimizing for seed to be able to plant 200 exotic yams? Also assuming you do one harvest a day and all your plants actually matured.

Thank you for clearing that up . I have little time to go and test things and gather info.

You are welcome I have some pretty extensive farms planned and my experience in testing was the fertilizer was not worth it. I am not sure faster for some but not all plants is worth thousands of coin. I will not be using it.

I’d have to disagree. After using the fertilizer a lot in live, it is essential for the time boost. Each tick has the opportunity to use the fertilizer, and then you have to reapply to potentially get a further boost.

Very true so I can use the fertilizer what 500 times and it sells for 10000 coin plus so on 500 plants how does faster give me an additional 20 coin per plant? And this assumes I do not reapply which means it is more cost per plant to recover. The market is not going to value a fertilized crop or seed more since it is no different from the unfertilized version so for a player to use it the time savings alone has to be worth over 10000 coin.

It only becomes worth the investment if you are able to bring your crop to market and sell out more than once per day. That is a very small player base who benefits from it, but since they are effective shaving 30% of maturity time per application, that is effectively increasing the amount of product they can yield daily by a substantial margin. So if you are farming, fertilizing, and selling your crops every day, you may see a significant increases in the volume of business you can do daily.

A looooong time. Haha.

I did say its not an overnight thing. And that was kinda the point, farming isnt instant gratification. Its “farming”, if it was instant it would just be called “harvesting”.

If you can apply twice and it sticks, which is not a given then you can turn two harvests in the time it normally takes for one. So if you get 250 plants per harvest, 500 applications applied twice to each plant and bought the fertilizer for no more than 10,000 coin then every coin per crop sold over 40 per is profit. So it is probably most worth it for more expensive crops also. If a starberry is selling for 10 coin per then the cost of fertilizer currently probably means this crop is not a good candidate for fertilizer. If it sells for 80 coin per then it might be.

Edit. Now you can make the point that if I do not use fertilizer every coin I make is profit since both scenarios ignore the cost to set up and the time to plant, harvest and in one case to apply fertilizer to each crop twice.

I am estimating 65 days planting and harvesting everyday and not having any plants not reach maturity. It seems to really speed up mathematically after you have 100 seeds to me. Early on there are a lot of days where you will get no increase in seeds due to the low seed return.

I’ll just say this. It’s nice to have something that I actually feel I have to work for in the game. That’s “My Take on Farming”.

Yeah agreed, having lots of seeds up front definitely speeds it up, thats a fact. Was just saying it is also possible doing it with less if youre not any huge rush.

Kinda like how you dont need a million dollars to start a savings account. Of course that compounding interest on a million dollars helps a lot, but it doesnt mean you cant put $10 a week in an account and watch it grow a little slower.

A few days? That sounds promising. My crops say 54 weeks…
