Have you seen the crystal leaving the totem while going on the targetted location? If now, are you holding down the button?
I figured it out 
I was returning to Sanctum and trying to cast my totem on the same planet, I now see that I am supposed to cast it from the actual planet ground to a close orbiting one! Thanks all for the help
